2014 M6 GC or M5

My lease on 2012 X5 50i gets over in a couple of months. Prior to that I had a 2007 530i. I have been in the BMW family for 8 years now and would like to continue the same. However, I am looking for something difference - an exciting and special/cool ride. In my area (Seattle), there are far too many 3s, 5s, 7s, X5s, X3s, several Mercedes/Lexus and few Porsche models. As a result, the current (and past) vehicle doesn’t feel special.

Thus, I am seriously considering the 6 GC – I hardly see them on the roads. And the M6 GC to make it more fun. There are many things I like and some not as much.

Pros:

- Looks very aggressive from both font and back! Sits low. For a change, the rear end of 6 looks cool – it is wider and lower than a 5
- Drives extremely well and feels like a sports car. Over the weekend I drove a fully loaded M6 GC and I am still excited by the feel of the ride ***61514;
- Shakir orange and Blue colors are very nice
- It has the cool factor that very few cars have. I know that’s a very subjective assessment

Cons

- We don’t get much sun here in Seattle. I enjoy the panoramic glass roof on my X5. However, the 6 has carbon roof – meaning no glass roof and the interior looks dark
- Much pricier than M5. For lease, it will make couple of hundred difference/month. I can swing it but I feel like BMW is charging too much extra for a different form factor
- Rear room is a slight con but it will be used primarily by kid

I would love to hear feedback and your thought process when you decided to get the M6 GC.
Also, did you consider M5 – what made you decide for M6?

Get a M6 GC, much more rare and for some reason drives different (better) than M5, drive them both and you will see what I mean. Besides at least here in SoCal i see so many 5 series daily, the M5 just blends in with all the 535 M sports I see...And the M6GC looks so much better...night and day

I used to have a 2001 E39 M5 and I loved that car. Had it from new and drove it into the ground until last year when it couldn't get through the smog. So, for a year I've been driving a 335i. Not my cup of tea really so I've just ordered a manual 2015 Gran Coupe. I also considered the M5 as I loved it before but I just couldn't get excited about it. What with the antennae on top of the car and all that it just looks too much like a regular 5. I took the GC for a test drive and loved it. Very fast. It's more expensive but, for me, it seemed worth it.

I disagree will never drive like a M6...You can chip it but you can chip a M6 also...My car makes crazy power and the 640/650 GC steering and handling are not in the same league as M6...I had a GC so I know this to be true

To me they both drove pretty similar. The m6 felt a bit more buttoned down and the steering felt a bit better. For me what it came down to was I just liked the look and design of both the interior and exterior better on the M6 gran coupe. If you aren't a car guy/gal it is difficult for most people to tell the difference between the 5 m-sport and the M5.

Even in Sakhir, with a carbon fibre spoiler, diffuser and Eisenmann back boxes, the M5 still looks like any old F10

With fewer additions (and still with winter wheels), the M6 GC just looks so much better!

I agree, GC wins by a wide margin in looks department, from various angles. Most differentiating is rear end - it looks much better with a wider and lower stance!

During my test drive last weekend, first I drove M6 and then 650. The power difference is certainly perceptible. In my opinion, the difference is far more pronounced in handling.

I wonder what other vehicles to consider - I do need 4 doors. My thought process is either I would settle for another X5 or go over the top and get something very special. X6M maybe? Porsche Maccan (mainly because it is more compact than Cayenne)? Panny 4S - Driven it and walked away with neutral feelings. Mercedes - doesn't excite me.

Can't go wrong with either one IMO. I must say though for me if I could pick I would go with m6GC but then again thats my favorite M car out right now

I also drove the panamera GTS which had great handling and engine note. I just really didnt like the looks. There is also the Audi S8 and RS7 both have terrific engines and are all wheel drive but didnt feel as engaging to me. The good news is that there are so many great choices!

I dont track my car, I felt the 650/640 GC M sport both feel sloppy. I do not like loose steering ala MB in my cars. I guess its personal preference but much prefer tighter steering and handling even if not on track.....My car dyno'ed at 590 rear wheel hp = about 678 at the crank, def different even with a tuned 650....

After 3 M5's, I had planned to replace my 2013 with a 2015 when they switch over to 15 production this summer. Ended up buying a GC this week instead. Its looks so much better than the M5. The M5 really doesnt look much different form a 550 M Sport. The GC is much more unique.

My dealer had a dedicated M showroom. The GC sitting next to a 5 is day and night even though I think the price difference is a little crazy.

To me the best styled M to date.

Couldn't agree more!
Both M5 and M6 are in stratospheric zone of sedans - hence both are truly great! However, M6 just feels so much better. The driving and handling is amazing - in relation to my experience of 2007 530 and 2012 X5 50i. I bet it handles sharper than M5 too although I haven't driven it.

With the 2013 m6 vs 2013 m5 I agree it is hands down the M6GC I would choose, however between the 2014 m6GC and m5 with the competition package (I've driven both a good bit), I would actually do the M5 because I found the handling indistinguishable between the two, and I like the extra space the M5 offers (plus saving $20k is nice).

2014 M5 has the steering updates of the GC which is why they handle and drive similar now. In addition all M6s have the updates first installed on the GC

I think the M5 looks too much like a m sport 5 series. In the bay area there are just soooo many 5 series.
