iDrive problem on 2007 650i

A friend of mine owns a 2007 650i convertible and has asked me about a problem he is having with his iDrive. I own an M2C, so I'm turning to the forum for help with information. His iDrive panel (probably one of the earliest for BMW) stopped working, so no more radio, navigation, warning sounds when near an object, some controls (e.g., airflow), access to vehicle information (e.g., tires), etc. The odd thing is that the dealer is uncertain of an diagnosis, so I'm asking for any help or information folks might have about the possible causes or likely fixes. He's understandably worried about the cost of replacing one or more computers! Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately, this forum is frequented more by f06/f12/f13 six series...your friend has an e63/e64 six series.
