Mazda Spied Testing RX-8 Powertrain Mule For Possible RX-9

Quote:
Reports about a new rotary-powered sports car from Mazda refuse to die and a couple of months after hopes were revived, a Japanese publication has speculated that the new vehicle could debut at October’s Tokyo Motor Show.

If the new car, reportedly dubbed the RX-9, were to debut in October, it would come 50 years after the Mazda Cosmo premiered and debuted the famed Wankel rotary engine.

Levolant Boost reports that the RX-9 will be heavily inspired by the RX-Vision that premiered in Tokyo 18 months ago and tip the scales at between 1,300 and 1,350 kg (2,866-2,976 lbs).

Few specifics have been offered about the car’s powertrain but the rotary engine could be dubbed ‘Skyactive-R’ and debut with forced induction to produce approximately 450 hp. The RX-9 may also be priced at around 8 million yen ($71,000).

As exciting as this news is, we’re taking it with a handful of salt, not just a grain. While it would be fitting for Mazda to celebrate the rotary engine’s 50th anniversary, the company has never said it is planning a new sports car and only admitted to continuing development of the Wankel hoping to find a breakthrough.

Jokes aside, if true, then hats off to Mazda for sticking it through.
This is potentially exciting news as the RX-8 never exactly captured the magic of the early RX-7s. But of course in this era of green/eco/etc., it's an uphill battle for the rotary engine, whose inherent design consumes fuel, emits lots of fumes, and drinks oil.
I especially loved the FD3S and FC3S, especially the FD, the driving experience and the noise is just sublime. In fact, the noise of any Wankel engine is just simply amazing, and they love to rev, FI or not.
The 26B in the 787B really demonstrated what rotaries are capable of.
So extreme, that it [the rotary engine] was banned in the following season. That sound...

I dont really know or care what engine they go to market with...if the styling of the production model is close to that of the prototype they will have a winner on their hands. That is a sexy car.

Epic. The interior is minimalism taken to the next level. Not a fan.

An affordable 400-500hp car that weighs under 3000lbs is too good to be true.

Mazda RX-9 Could Get Aston Martin-Esque Doors

Quote:
The Mazda RX-9, if it ever happens, could arrive on the market with doors very similar to those used throughout the Aston Martin range.

RX-badged Mazda if the vehicle is ever given the thumbs up for production.

Rumors of a Mazda RX-9 have been swirling for over three years but the automaker has yet to confirm or totally deny the prospect of a new rotary-powered sports car. Instead, Mazda has kept up the hope of its fans by saying work is being done on a new rotary engine and that it could be on the cusp of returning.

Will all of these rumors prove true or false? It’s difficult to say at this stage but there is certainly hope within Mazda that the RX-9 could see the light of day.

Will it still have that cool beeping/buzzer sound when it hits the redline?

I know the RX7 and RX8 cars had that and it sounds cool

Mazda Patents Twin-Turbo Electric Supercharger Engine

Will it reach production in a rear-wheel drive coupe?

Just a week after it announced its plans for a revolutionary sparkles gasoline engine, Mazda has filed a patent application for another impressive technology that might give the good old internal combustion engine a fresh breath of air. What we see in the attached images is an engine that uses two conventional turbochargers and an electric supercharger.

It’s not a completely new idea as Volvo proposed a similar 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor a few years ago, but the Swedish company never did enough to put it on the production line. This new patent suggests Mazda is eager to bring it to the market.

The basic idea is simple yet brilliant. The electric supercharger is used to build pressure in the low end of the rev range, eliminating the turbo lag, while the classic turbos improve the efficiency and give more power in the higher revs. Naturally, an intercooler is used to cool intake air discharger from the electric supercharger and the turbochargers.

Motor Trend points out that this new engine is “clearly meant for a rear-wheel drive car,” which makes us even more excited about it. We don’t know its displacement, but it already seems too complicated and, probably, too big and powerful for the MX-5, so another RWD car should be the answer. One possible and more plausible option would be a larger sports car, something like a non-rotary successor for the RX-8.

However, a Wankel-powered Mazda RX-9 is rumoured to debut during the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show in late October, going on sale by the end of next year. Preliminary details suggest it would be heavily inspired by the 2015 RX Vision concept and could have up to 400 horsepower from its rotary engine.

That's an amazing car. Looks gorgeous. I hear the motors on the RX9 might actually last 40,000 miles before they grenade. Should be good times.

Would be nice, why not just offer the rotary as a factory installed crate engine... to avoid fun killer regs.

Interested to see how Mazda engineers may have addressed all the huge shortcomings of that engine. Obviously key to its viability and success now. The 1995 R1 was $34K new which is $55k in today's dollars.
