M6 GC traction problems?

Hi

I'm thinking of buying one of these this year and haven't driven one as yet. I used to own an E60 M5.

I've been reading and watching all the on line reviews and it seems to have been universally well liked. Perhaps the best M car for some time?

However quite a few of the on line user vids I've seen seem to report major traction issues. It's these traction issues that have always put me off buying an AMG merc. The last few I test drove were great fun but the tyres were always struggling for grip with the traction control going crazy.

I know that one has to learn to use the throttle carefully in a 500+ rwd drive car but do you owners find it a frustrating experience?

Thanks for your help

Hi Idnus,

Not someone who can comment on the driving of this one, I like you, had the E60 some years back, and never had a problem with the traction on it. I know the Merc have always had that mentioned in reviews, although i think it is mainly down to driving style, and being aware of the conditions it can and cannot handle, and down to your driving ability.

Clearly a lot of power, and I've got some friends with the M5 and never heard them mentioning it.

You may want to talk to dealers at the moment about this though, there is a healthy discount available from BMW until the end of June (No doubt a new offer will come on then, but equally they may end the major deal).

The current deal is what swung me to look at it

If you apply all the grunt from a stopped car then it will scrabble for bite even on a dry road , unless you feed the power in slowly , on the move however things are better, but the traction lights flicker a lot.
It's all about delivering the power slower IMO.
You end up going just as quick once underway.
Who really wants to put down all the power on wet damp roads anyway
If you are looking for a "traffic Light sprinter" forget this car.

Any car on street legal tires will struggle to "hook-up" with the power band of the M6, lighter cars are not immune. Good luck finding one that doesn't and has all the positives of the M6.

That said, it's not annoying in the sense that it doesn't jerk when losing traction in straight line acceleration, it does however impede acceleration. My Z06 jerked when losing tracking, and you could feel the car struggle to get traction, both in throttle being cut and rear brakes being applied. As I said, the M6 does it more seamless, but if you watch the traction control light on the dash it flashes constantly on hard acceleration, depending on surface composition and temperature, the car will finally hook-up at around 40-60mph and you can feel the acceleration pickup.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Matt, I never had traction issues with the E60 M5 either, but then it didn't have the torque of modern turbo charged M cars. Interesting comment you made about the current deals. There are low mileage, less than a year old examples in the bmw used section for £70k ie £30k less than their rrp with a few options.

Are the deals for a new one better than that?

Thanks

As you said, putting that much power over that much torque on ground when you want to start moving with hard acceleration is hard for a RWD car and you see lose of traction and that's why DSC is going to work efficiently to keep stability. If you turn off DSC or MDM you can feel side way skidding, but to me it's fun and I enjoy this fun every single day and push the car in safe area to feel that fish tailing However if you hate traction issue, I think AWD is what makes you happy

With DSC on, my traction light flashes until 80mph. Major traction issues under hard acceleration...

With traction ON the car won't feel as fast, with MDM it will be fine, but might drift if you floor it hard. With DSC OFF, you will fly all over the place

As John says, I've been hunting and spec'ing the last 2 weeks, and I have now what I think is a stunning deal, so yes.. current deal ends at the end of June and I believe you have to be in the car before end of september, so while the build slots remain, they remain available.. no idea what would happen if they ran out of slots for pre october delivery
