Too quiet
Just picked up a M6 gran coupe. Car is a lot quieter then I expected. Will adding catless downpipes give me a little more sound? I would rather not hchange the whole exhaust. Was thinking Jb stage 1 and some catless downpipes.
Thank you |

JB4 is a good call and you can go with a resonator + muffler delete, if you're going to do catless downpipes you might as well do whole exhaust.

When I took deliver of my 2016 last May, my dealer installed the Super Sprint Catless down pipes when the car had its first service around 2000 km ... The sound didn't really change much other than being able to hear a little more turbo spool which was ok but the exhaust note was still lacking! I think BMW finally came to realize how lacking this factor was and clients really didn't like the piped in exhaust noise via the stereo ... And thus eventually went to akra and re-badged the akra full evolution titanium system as a BMW M Perf Part one can order through BMW parts I did the akra version as the only difference was the BMW "///M" logo quad carbon fiber tips vs the akra carbon fiber quad tips and it was $2500 less Canadian to get it via akra distributors vs BMW The akra is simply a straight through exhaust system with a different resonator that is less restrictive if not just straight through The akra went in at 2700 km and WOW The sound is very intoxicating now ... However I still miss the screaming of the high rev'ing V10 as that was very unique for sound The turner muffler delete gives a similar sound for a much reduced price as he akra does ... Power increase likely not as good as the akra setup. I never heard this setup in person ... Only utube clips on here Going catless will give you 15 to 20 hp more but likely will give you the CEL (check engine light) due to emmisions either all the time or just under WOT as it does in my setup! The increase in turbo spool sound with the SS catless is nice but the exhaust tone is lacking on its own If it is purely the exhaust sound, I'd do the turner muffler delete first and see if that is enough for you as it is very cost effective ... Then go from there! There are multiple threads re the turner muffler delete with utube video clips for sound ... But I don't think the utube videos do the sound justice that in person listening would do By the time I had the akra on, I started to see the turner muffler delet threads ... However didn't hear it in person! I love my set up, but it took some time and $$$ to get to where I liked the sound (SS catless and full akra evo) ... Now for Dinan this summer (stage 1 or 2). There are other set ups avail (eissenmann race or sport etc etc). My last M6 I started with eisenmann race but the drone killed my ears ... Swapped for the sport and it was perfect ... And just a little louder than the stock setup. The issue with some of the setups is drone and will that kill your ears There are many options and PRI$E points ... But it truely comes down to research and seeing what sound you are after or find intoxicating Hope this helps Congrats and Welcome to the addiction Last edited by 2007 to 2016 M6 Cab; 04-09-2016 at 09:41 AM.. |

I've done the muffler delete and the sound difference is night and day. Car sounds like what it should sound like. Driving through underpasses and tunnels, I let my gear sit on 2nd and rev to 7k, it sounds like a F1 car.
I should actually record some footage in one of the tunnels here in downtown. |

It's quite a bit louder when you cut the top off.... Give it a shot.

If you're concerned about drone, just stay stock

First major mod I did was the M Performance Exhaust, which in the M6 is the same as the Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust. No drone, just a beautiful, high pitched V8 sound. Worth every penny. I was coming from the V10 M6 which wounded monstrous even stock so the lack of sound in the TTV8 was really bothering me.

I'd love to get the akra or m-perf exhaust, but I just figured I could spend the extra cash on other stuff. Muffler delete only has slight a bit of drone on 7th gear. I tend to drive in manual mode so drone is not an issue for me.

Drone isn't as much a sound as it is a vibration in the cabin that causes unwanted rattles. Can be extremely annoying sometimes. I for one rather not have any drone. That's what so great about how the Italians handle their exhaust notes. They sound super aggressive at idle yet have 0 drone.
