Steering wheel vibration above 90MPH?
I've had this for a few months now. It's non-existent under 90. Took it to the dealer and they said that they could not test the car at those speeds (which I understand.....but doesn't mean I should accept it). They said the front wheels were not bent and they were properly balanced. They did say I needed an alignment but that isn't going to cause a steering wheel shake. Any guesses?
I assume they Roadforce the wheels. Is it possible to balance the wheel up to that high of a speed and then maybe they didn't balance it above? In other words....could it have been balanced fine all the way to 90 and then the tech got lazy and slapped them back on the car without going higher? |

I would get the alignment! To start off with. It could be all out of whack and working against each wheel.

How many miles on the car? Possibly front bushings are worn.

Hi chaps
Since the purchase of my vehicle I have had few issues with my m6 13 plate now 16000 miles. Driven it for 4 months. The oil consumption issue is being investigated. It consumes like a litre at every 300-400 miles which is way too excessive. My other main concern is as I have just come back from a Europe round robin 1200 miles trip. On the motorways anything above 100 miles the steering starts vibrating. And the shudder is consistent between 104 - 125 miles. Beyond that speed the shudder goes but can feel the vibration travelling through the shaft. I have had the tracking and balancing done twice but the problem still persists. What do you think it can be ? |

My issue is still there.....I would bet it's my tires. I bought a set of Pirellis off Ebay (they were new) but likely they were old stock (which now explains the cheap price I paid).
The car had 0 issues with this up until I posted all being balanced at the same dealer so it's not the dealer. They said the wheels aren't bent. I had the alignment done, it didn't change it for the better or worse. I just deal with it....my lease is up in December anyways.

I've had this same issue in my 13 M6 Coupe. The dealership claims there's no issue with alignment and the tires were road force balanced on installation, but I pick up that oscillation above 85+MPH also. It's been suggested that it's a combination of the paving of the road and wheelbase of the car that causes a 'phase' at a certain speed, because it does diminish on other roads or disappear at higher speeds.
I'm still trying to figure it out, and hope to test when a few friends bring their M6's up for a fall drive, where I can swap cars and see if it happens to all of us (suggesting road conditions) or if it's my car only. |

All of you guys experiencing vibration at around 80-90 mph is because of tires or rims out of specs. In some cases because of the suspension components but you should know if alignment was done.
I had the same issue and the BMW dealer couldn't fix it after 3 visits to fix "bent rims, alignment and road force balance all the wheels (Which is impossible to be done because one of my tires was out of round, which I explained below)". The technician either didn't actually do the road force balance, no skills or just lied to me. It cost me over 500 at the dealer but they didn't do jack sh*t for me. At the end, I found a shop that specialize in tires and their technician was able to correctly diagonal one of my tires was out of round. Therefore, he couldn't balance that wheel and the tire needed to be replaced to fix it. I replaced that tire and he was able to road force balance that wheel. My car is smooth even over 100+ mph. In addition, that place provided a print out of the specs for each wheel after it was done. That's the only way you would know for sure it was done correctly. Basically you have to find a shop that actually have a machine that can do a road force balance AND a technician has the skills to use it and honestly do their job. I’m glad you were able to get your issue fixed. My thing is, I find it hard to believe everyone here (now including myself) issue is caused from our tires. I mean, unless we’re all running a bad batch of PS4’s or something which I obviously doubt. Not saying I have the answer, bc I don’t, but it seems more car specific rather than tire. FYI mine just started within the last few months..didn’t hit any hard bumps, tires are solid with 5k miles on them. Mine shakes around 88-98mph - only when cruising though. Hard accelerations through those speeds and I feel nothing.

im running stock tires PSS, but i noticed that one of the front wheel have double weights then another side... so i think just bended wheel and they just did not the best work for road forced balancing... but who knows... i will find out when i change the wheel will be more likely next year :P

From my experience vibration at certain speeds can be a hand full of things on these cars, very slight wheel bend, wires inside of the tires spreading (common after track days), unbalanced wheel & tires and alignment.
The one thing that has nearly fixed all of the above is road force balancing the wheels & tires. I had a very bad vibration from 100-115ish mph and had a local shop road force balance and "tire match" the machine told them where the tire and rim need to be for a perfect balance. I had a very unnoticeable bend on the front right rim. Overall I don't have any vibration!
