Newbie... Just bought a 2012 650i Coupe
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Anyways it should be here in 10 days, and it's the first coupe in Boston. Can't wait to see a white one with the M- sport package and 20" wheels... Anyways I'm excited to be part of this great community.

Congrats, man. I just ordered a 650i coupe that's carbon black with white interior and all options except for the Bang and Olufsen sound system. Lots of pics of the carbon black M-sport edition out there so far. Need more of the white pics!

LED Headlamps an evaluation?
Sounds great. Did you have a chance to sample the LED headlamps? I've yet to find anyone who has seen them in operation. I'm about to order a
640d but need to evaluate the LED headlamps before purchase. The brochure is full of marketing 'guff' with a lot of references to 'joy' flowing from almost everything and even references the LED 'shelf life' as if that were relevant! Unfortunately the European literature fails to provide any objective support for their purchase! Anybody with first hand experience? Nick |

Yes. I have the full LEDs on my 650xi Coupe. I think they're worth the money based on looks alone. However, if that is not reason enough... They are amazingly white and illuminate the road better than anything else I've ever seen. The corner illumination that turns on once you switch on the turn signal or turn the wheel past a certain point is another awesome feature. The area that is illuminated is far greater than any other headlights.
If you need justification, then they do improve visibility and safety. But aside from that, they are extremely unique and change the appearance of the car. One last note: BMW is planning to put them on the 7 update as well as the new X6 (i.e. the high-end Bimmers). I plan on keeping my car for more than 2-3 years, and I don't want it to look dated. Just my thoughts. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input, it's good to hear you think they are more effective than gas discharge (for example!). You're the first person I've communicated with whose actually sat behind a set. Of course they do look great as well!!

I really did have that "holy crap, these are good!" moment the first night I had my car. To be completely honest, I got them because of their looks, but there is much more to them than their beauty. They are one of my favorite features on the entire car.
On a similar note, the auto high beams are really cool feature. I've only had one instance where they were a bit slow to turn off. Other than that they haven't missed a beat. I didn't think much about the feature as it is standard, but very cool (same with the auto windshield wipers - I like my toys).

Hey guys, I've seen this owner posting over on F10post. He recently picked up a 2012 550xi. I don't know if he still owns this 650i.

What a great set of pics! They look simply stunning. I hesitate to prevail on you further but do you by any chance have any pics showing the view from the drivers seat when on full LED beam! I'm a 'fanboy' like the rest but as they say 'seeing is believing' and on this issue that's what really counts!
After your raptuous support I'm almost there but this would be the icing on the cake. Is there anyone else with experience of these remarkable headlights? Nick |

After the coupe came on the market, the convertible has got this option as well, at least in Europe.
Too late for me though

FRONT: Xenon headlights LED parking and position lights LED turn signals LED fog lights LED daylight driving lights Halogen light only: Adaptive curve light REAR: LED rear lights LED turn signals LED brake lights LED number plate lights Ordinary bulb in the rear foglights All info according to my Owners Manual. Since appearance of the coupe, even the vert is optional with full LED, which is a completely different headlight housing.

Thanks Southern6er22 for all your efforts. These are the only pics I've seen of the LED main beam option in action. I've been waiting a while for an objective response from BMW Germany to support their (woolley!) marketing claims! It must be a question on many people's lips and your pics are great service to all of us!
Sooo... it looks like I'll be leaving the LED main beam option ticked on my order! Thanks again Southern6er22 for going out of your way to be so helpful, it seems acts like this are fairly common in this forum! Makes me glad I joined it!! Nick |
