Why is the 6GC so expensive?

Why is the 6 GC not competitive in terms of price against the CLS and A7? The CLS and A7 are based on the E and A6 respectively. The 6er GC is essentially based on the 5er but the GC is marketed as a 6 series. Is that why it's so expensive? Will MB and Audi match the pricing of the 6 GC, making the CLS and A7 much more expensive(I sure hope not).

The 6er is in a higher class than the E Class and 5 Series. You'd think they have to make it more expensive than the coupe given it actually has a backseat and slightly more powerful engine.

I agree. If anything, the 6GC is based on the 6 Coupe rather than the 5 Series. Other than 4 Doors and 4 (accommodating) seats, the 6 and 5 don't really have much in common.

The six series is designed for individuals that would buy a 7 series only if it were cooler looking and in some cases were a coupe.

The six series has the status of a 7 series (if there is such a thing) but the looks of a cool, vibrant car.

Not some stodgy old man buggy.

more important question is:

should GC be more expensive than Coupe?
(eg. should S class be more expensive than CL and SL?)

If GC was different/distinct than Coupe (not just 4 door), I may be ok with it, but in my opinion it just downgraded Coupe's value.

(a little background: I got into my first e63/64 6-series because all of my friends thought my 7-series was my father's. with 6-series i got the coupe + more prestige feel from bmw brand. now with GC, something out of 5-series is expensiver than 7-series AND it's a 4-door. What the hell??)

Anyone feel the same?

I agree and get where you're coming from. It does seem like with the coupes you do pay a lot for the exclusivity, and the GC does take away from that. I think the biggest problem in the line-up is the fact that BMW put the price of the 6 coupe too low. I would've prefered them have the base price at $95000 and add several of the packages as standard - because anyone who buys the 6er is not going to pass up heated seats, etc. that should be standard on this car. My guess is BMW wanted to make the car seem more accessible with the $83k price, but doing that puts a huge gap between the 6er and the CL550, despite the fact that they really are competitors (when you equip the 6 with the same options). Then they added the GC further messing with the line-up. I think most would agree that a CLS is not an S Class, thus the relatively large price gap. Making the 6GC a competitor with the CLS therefore downgrades the 6 coupe which is equivalent to a 7er/S/CL. I guess it does help that the 6GC is a good bit more than the CLS550 (about same price as CLS63).

There are a million ways to analyze their decision making process and where they wanted the cars to sit in the brand. Despite all of this, the 6er is a stunning car that attracts more attention than practically any other car on the road (aside from Ferraris, Lambos, and Astons).

Just a quick interjection: the 6 is base off of the 5 platform but isn't the 5 based off of the 7 platform ?

lol :-)

"officially" i think 6 is based off of 5.

but then again, 5 is based on 7 and 3 is based on 5 and 1 is based on 3 and mini is based on 1. so...

we're all (7, 5, 6, 3, 1, mini) driving a 7 at the end of the day. yay~ :-)
