BMW 640i Gran Coupe North American Debut at Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance
Here are a few pictures of the new 640i GC at Amelia Island. The car is truly amazing and is sexy as hell. It's so beautiful in person with its wide and low proportions. Not a big fan of the frozen colors, this GC had the frozen bronze which is great for a show, but I'm not sure I would like it day to day. Saw the M5 at the LA Auto Show this past November with a matte silver and it was nice, again, maybe for a show car, but not day to day.
The interior is awesome and the finishes are beautiful. I set the driver's seat to my comfort, I'm 6', then got into the back seat to check out the leg room and I found it to be very comfortable. I did notice that this car had soft close doors, but on the 'build your own' there's no mention of soft close doors as standard or option. Also, I noticed that the rear side window sunshades are powered and not manual as the spec list describes on the BMW website under the luxury seating package. Enjoy the pics, I know I enjoyed seeing this car. I'm wondering if the power shades and soft-close are non-US spec. On my coupe I couldn't get soft-close (rear shade isn't an issue since we don't have a backseat lol).
Thanks for the pics. Looks great. I'm with you on the matte - beautiful to show, hell to live with... and this is coming from someone who babies a carbon black 650xi on a twice weekly basis.

Mr. Thomas and I attended an event a month or so ago for BMW and we got to see this car in person and all I can say is the pictures do not do this car justice, its absolutely stunning in person. Def one of my favorite BMW's to date!

Got to see this in person since I was at Amelia this past weekend. Didn't notice any ambient lighting on the B-pillar however in person this thing is gorgeous. Really pretty nicely proportioned. Only issue I have is calling it a 6 series since 6 has always been a true coupe (2 doors only). If they'd called it the 8 series (since that car has been gone long enough for the badge to be recycled) I think it would've worked a bit better. From a design standpoint it's awesome and the interior is exceptionally comfortable too. Here are my photos:

Ceramic Control Contrast stitching Electric Rear Sunshade Head-up Display HiFi Sound System Professional Leather Instrument Panel Rear-view Camera SIRIUS Satellite Radio Tuner with 1 yr. subscription Soft Close Doors Surround View Love em all. The surround view cameras are an awesome option... gives you the wide angle view at front when coming out of a parking spot or at our front security gate. A kid approached on the sidewalk riding his bicycle. Would not have seen him until he was in our front fender!!! |

I have all of those except for surround view, rear shade, and soft-close. Surround view for us is in the "driver assistance package" with park assist (not available on xDrive), side-view, HUD, top view, lane keep assist, and blind spot assist. I opted to drop this option ($3700, I believe) and just went for the HUD by itself (saved me about $2000). I'm very glad I got the HUD as I can't imagine the car without it. Blind spot, unfortunately, I found hard to see when quickly glancing at the mirror during my test drive during the day (probably more obvious at night), so I didn't feel too compelled to get that. I might have considered the package for lane keep assist if I did more highway, but I don't do much long distance driving. The rear shade comes with the luxury seating package for us. I opted out of that $2000 option because the ventilated seats don't do much for me since they just blow air rather than get cold (like my Denali does - I appologize for favoring a feature on an American car lol). The active seats are nice, but not worth $2000. Thus the package just wasn't worth the extra money. We don't get soft-close (or shadowline) at all in the US. Very unfortunate as I've had several occasions where the door didn't properly close. I really wish I had that and an auto trunk - unbelievable that they left these two options off of a $100k car.
I like the way the packaged these features for y'all. It makes sense and probably saved a lot of money rather than buying them all individually (leather dash $1500, ceramic controls $650, premium sound $1800, HUD $1300, etc.).

Are you familiar with the E90......? How do you rate the rear seat space of the 6-series in comparison? |

The rear seats of the 6 GC were more contoured and form fitting. A lot more comfortable than the 3 series. There is also the feeling of less volume in the 6 GC than the 3, giving a more sporty, sleek feeling.
