BMW 6 Series Gets New Technology for Spring 2016
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW 6 Series Gets New Technology for Spring 2016 BMW has announced some technology updates for the BMW 6 Series for this upcoming Spring. This is a global press release. BMW 6 Series model range: telephony with wireless charging and wi-fi hotspot are standard, new menu display for the BMW iDrive operating system. Attractive additions to the list of standard equipment will shine an even brighter spotlight on the exclusive character of the BMW 6 Series from spring 2016. All model variants of the BMW 6 Series Coupe, BMW 6 Series Convertible and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe come as standard with the ConnectedDrive navigation package. The smartphone integration facility already included in this package will be joined by the telephony with wireless charging function making its debut in the new BMW 7 Series. This innovative function makes in-car mobile phone usage that much easier. Smartphones allowing inductive charging can be topped up with power (using contactless technology) while on the move in the special mobile phone compartment in the centre console. Furthermore, the wi-fi hotspot provides an internet connection for mobile devices. Another new feature benefits the iDrive operating system which, in BMW 6 Series models, includes a 10.2-inch Control Display and the Touch Controller with touch-sensitive surface. The main menu and the functions of the navigation, entertainment and communications systems, among others, will adopt the visual appearance presented for the first time in the new BMW 7 Series. Lists will be replaced by tile symbols arranged side-by-side to guide users to the desired functions. |

It's quite annoying that they didn't do these upgrades when the LCI came out a few months ago...
I am curious to see if the new Idrive will be a hardware upgrade or not. |

I was told by BMW center in NYC that BMW's WiFi hot spot is provided and locked by AT&T and is NOT unlimited data.
Can anyone confirm and/or clarify this?

Here I am sitting in the corner waiting for the internet to load anything without crashing, and the Connected Office to work with iOS. Guess that ship has sailed?

Agreed-you either like iDrive and get it, or don't. I can't do without it and the HUD either!

Remember BMW invented (or first released) this technology in the 7er around 2001 or so. I remember Car and Driver bitching about it and every new BMW that had it. I stopped reading that rag years ago. Now Mercedes, Audi and many others have some system that resembles iDrive but not as intuitive (IMHO) |

As a software engineer, this is a welcome option but highly unnecessary considering how smartphones continue to exponentially improve in technology

BMWs prior to model year 2014 I believe (with the exception of the 2014 X6) will not be able to use the SOS button & services.

Why anyone would want a separate data plan is beyond me. I have a hotspot in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and it goes unused. I'm already paying for data plans on my phones and not only could I use one of them as a hotspot, but I can continue using them if I leave my vehicle.
Still, I'm looking forward to the new 6-series. The current one is excellent as long as you can deal with its girth. The new one should go on a diet to make up for the fact that I have not. |
