Newbie saying hi.

Hi Folks,

Just bought myself a 2011 640i convertible to replace a 2006 SL as the daily hack. Absolutely loving it so far. Bought it from an independent dealer. it's got a couple of issue, but they are going to fix them (i hope).

It's space grey with a cream interior. the adaptive drive option is what sold it to me, but it's also got a heated steering wheel, surround camera, steering wheel paddles, soft close doors and hud. so not a bad spec at all. I'll need to read the FAQs to figure out how to post pics.

Looking forward to contributing to the forum. I've had quite a few cars so hopefully i've gained some knowledge over the years.

Now i need your help. One of the issues i have is that the buttons (e.g. NAV, OPTIONS, MENU, etc) around the iDrive knob do not light up. Is this normal?

Oh, and i only picked up the car on Saturday and the BMW badged at the front has already gone missing. Is stealing them still a thing these days?

Thanks

Pav

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a nice 640i, it certainly has good specs, especially adaptive drive, HUD and surround view.
The iDrive control is so intuitive and I've never had cause to look at it in the dark, but I'll check to see if the buttons illuminate this evening and let you know.
My previous 640i was a 2011 model and I began to seriously consider replacing it in 2015. I've lost track of how many cars I drove, including Audis, Mercs and Porches, but couldn't find anything to equal the 6 so I ended up with a new 640i last September - a major deciding factor was the button layout, you very quickly learn how to find what you want without having to take youe eyes off the road.

ok. i think i've figured out how to post pics. the weather has been crap here in the uk so these are from the dealers website.

I'm now based in Peterborough. Moved up here from NW London about a year ago. mainly 'cause i had no chance of affording a house with a double garage in London.

I'm on my 2nd 640i. Drove the 'd' for a weekend and had an F10 535d (same engine) for 2 years, it's a great engine with bags of torque but it lack the free revving ability of the petrol.
Also, quiet as it is, there's no getting away from the fact that it's a diesel and, IMO, it just doesn't suit such a graceful car as the 6 series.

Just checked mine last night and, along with everything else on the centre console and gear lever, they do illuminate but the level is dependent on the dimmer wheel setting.

You should have some form of warranty with the car so it might be worth getting it checked.

nice car. Excited to be a fellow convertible owner. This is my 3rd BMW. I had an M6, a 328 hardtop cabriolet, and now a barbera red 650i convertible
