The next generation 6 Series takes shape.

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

The next generation 6er takes shape.

There are several ideas on where to take the 6er visually and there is a lot of ideas being communicated in the design process. Some ideas are progressing ideas showcased within recent concepts. Some can be interpreted as the Vision Future Luxury turned into a smaller mid-sized Coupe but with a more dynamic roofline and shallow glasshouse which creates problems but offers other solutions for a Gran Coupe model.

The outline remains as sport-orientated as it can be rounded and very sleek incorporating some ideas from the recent 4er Coupe which its stretched roofline puts the C-pillar just behind the rear wheels and allows a short rear overhang. Some suggest it looks as dynamic as an Aston Martin.

Front kidney Grilles could be upturned as a reverse from standard BMWs. Or as some ideas suggest shaping the grilles to be octagonal like the wings of Darth Vader's TIE-Fighter. (Hence this weeks Star Wars quotes and the fact I watched all of The Clone Wars).

The headlights can be ultra slim or a sharper evolution from today's car utilising a reverse of the forthcoming L shaped headlights.

Compared to today's car there is a more sharper contrast within the styling , organic rounded lines making way for sharper technical edges and a visual look to the more angular age of the E9 and E24.

The air breather is part of the car instead of an add on. And like the new 7er becomes three dimensional but continues the L-shape language that will feature as an evolutionary continuation of the "Bow Line" on the side of the car but be more angular. The Air Breather crosses through this line with an L superimposed on the L of the lower body.

The upper section of the car is more three dimensional and forms at the rear a flatter but modern 6er wrap around bootlid with high placed rear lights similar to how the Vision Future Luxury rear. There are several ideas for the rear lights , some use the L shape as of typical BMW in many variations of size between the length and height of the two lines. There are some ideas that even use |_____| across the boot lid! mimicking amongst others the current Jaguar XJ. The 6er will be offered not only with optional Laser Headlights but also OLEDS.

The interior is an evolution of today's car what with the "Waterfall" effect providing more intimacy to the driver and the centre console is slightly raised and the passenger section is more surface like to accommodate the passenger display monitor. The L shapes continue in the interior door trim that wraps around the front to the rear compartment.

The 250KG weight loss is significant for the 6er the chassis architecture is a blend of high-strength steel, aluminium, magnesium and Carbon fibre. The roof structure AB& C pillars are Carbon Fibre. As is a Carbon Fibre roof (An aerodynamic Carbon roof will be exclusive to the M6.). This reduces the centre of gravity even greater than the current F13 M6 Coupe.

The 6er will be configured in a Coupe and Cabrio again with a folding buttress-like soft top roof. The Gran Coupe is being decided as an 8er model.

Early discussion around the next M6 leads to talk of around 650PS with additional Carbon being supplied on the bonnet lid and rear boot lid as well as areas in the drivetrain and additional areas with the chassis and suspension.

For the first time the M6 will be offered with xDrive as well as standard rear wheel drive.

Exciting evolution, Scott. Love the style and design of my current 6er Gran Coupe but would certainly upgrade to this when it becomes available - presuming 2016. It has elements of the current Z4 in lines and proportion and the Vision Luxury Concept (though I am still wondering who at BMW loves Cadillac)

Now please could we have three small things:

1. A powered boot lid
2. A panoramic sun-roof with electric blinds (not a cloth blind) - ideally fully venting not just tilt - helps make the shallow glasshouse more atmospheric
3. Proper channels in rear boot lid so water can drain off rear windscreen, to avoid it overflowing and soiling boot lid with watermarks and dirt.

(if i could squeeze one in - now 4)

4. Whoever designs the alloys, please don't run channels behind the spokes - they're a night mare to keep clean (read: skinned knuckles)

I know the boys will keep it low, wide, refined and not brash (like the 4er perhaps needs to be).

Thanks

...and a choice of fold-down rear seat backs, and/or rear seat delete in the coupe.

Passenger display? What is that? Is it the regular iDrive screen or are you referring to something new?

If it looks anything like the picture provided... I'm ready

Seeing how BMW's usual generational life span is about 7 years, I'd be surprised if we see the new 6er hit the market before 2018 as a MY2019 (F12/13 6 Series went to market in 2011). Regardless, this sounds very enticing and I can't wait to see where BMW takes the next generation M6. I've really enjoyed the last two generations.

I'm liking the profile view of that render. Looking forward to seeing additional angles of it.

This render is gorgeous! The 6er is my favorite BMW on the road right now. It has the perfect balance of aggressiveness but still remaining elegant. Love the 6GC, can't wait to see where it evolves next....

Cool car with lots of power ... It's only problem it is way toooooo long, even the current model. That makes the 4-series/M4 the perfect alternative

I am trully and honestly excited about the new generation G bmw´s. I think we can all agree the current lineup has been the worse for some time now. From the dull dynamics to the bloated size/weight and the poor construction/interior quality, loss of NA engines, and pretty much every bmw´s rule beeing broken for the sake of profit (50:50 weights, rwd etc), to the bland designs - at least bangle made a good talking point -. The 90´s X4 interior was outdated 4 years ago when it came out on the X3, and a 2014 90000 M4 convertible with rear bulb lights??? And what about the plastics in the 100000 I8 ? C´mon bmw

I am hoping for some exciting interiors with matching interior quality, some refined diesel engines, and above all, a proper drivers bmw, like the good old days.

Hopefully bmw´s G models will bring me back to bmw.

I'm in a 2014 M6 manual tranny. I hope they decide to continue to offer a manual version, I have no interest in a auto/dct. weight reduction is welcome, I would like to see a factory rear seat delete as the back is useless.

Hoping to see some of the dynamism from the previous gen 6 make a return.

I miss those thick bold sweeping lines. It was truly such a gorgeous car.

This gen went a little too understated and bug eyed, with large lights and simpler lines. I miss the aggression and the boldness.

Sounds like the next gen will be a good compromise between agressive and elegant.

I personally think the current gen M6 is the best looking BMW in the fleet. I saw an M6 Grand Coupe yesterday and almost shat my pants, it was effin gorgeous. Pics don't do justice. Anyways, this looks ok, but I hope they don't stray too far from the current gen styling and get too "concepty" with it.

Offering xdrive on the 6er means the m5 will have it next as well and we'll see that carry down to the m3/4. With amg and Audi offering it, BMW would be stupid not to have that as a option.

I like the drawing so far. I really appreciate the small(er) headlight design. The old 6er headlights were just hideous. The current model are much better, but a sleek design, like the 2er/4er would be excellent.
