Time for a new set of Boots

After 20k miles, my tyres are ready for a change. I have decided to replace the existing 20 inch Dunlop SP Sport Max GT runflats with Michelin Pilot Super Sports (which are not runflats) which I have read some good things about. I am doing this in the hope that the softer sidewalls will help make the ride just a little less hard. I will report back when it's done.

I shall keep a can of tyre weld in the boot but I feel the need to keep a spacesaver wheel in the garage as well just in case I blow out close to home. Plenty of them available 2nd hand on eBay which are good enough for me. But which size? There are some R18s available for X5s but will they be too tall for the 6ers wheel arches? Is an R17 wheel better? And is the configuration of the 5 wheel bolts the same on all BMW models?

Looking forward to hearing the difference once they are fitted.

I'm in the same boat this month, down to 2.5 on the rears and 3 on fronts so need changing soon

One thing I've noticed is the cost between non run flats and run flats has narrowed a lot recently, mines on 19s and the price only a hundred different for a full set !!

Let us know if you get fixed up this week as it will prob influence my decision lol

Are we allowed to replace these Runflats with air tyres? I was told it would invalidate the warranty ?

Yeah that's an urban legend mate, you can put whatever you want on, I spent years thinking the same, then emailed BMW and they confirmed its just a nice to have option on the car and doesn't affect the warranty at all

When I bought mine the tyres on the back were around 3mm and I said to the dealer that I wanted Michelin super sports put on and at first he said no problem but after looking into it he said while its under warranty they can only replace with run flat tyres and gave me a choice of 3 types but did say if I was paying I could put what I wanted on.

Speaking of tyres I'm so surprised it didn't go down or crack the wheel after hitting this hole in the road! I am taking it get it checked out this morning as it seems to need balancing slightly.

I fitted Michelin super sports a month ago, the ride is hugely improved, I noticed that with the runflats some man hole covers which have sunk in the road felt like hitting a railway sleeper! I did stop to check one and in reality it wasn't that bad, just a trait of the RFT tyres.

+1 for the update. I still have plenty of tread left, but when I change the tyres I'm pretty sure I will be going to super sports

Tyres are on back order so I will have to wait a couple of weeks. About £950 for all 4 fitted (gulp!)

Anyone know the answer to my space saver wheel question?

So I went into a local tyre shop to check my tyre and wheel after the pothole.
Bulge found so a new tyre is required @ £375 for one run flat Dunlop. I managed to get it for £265 all in.

What did you mean? So basically you can put anything you like on? I thought you would need to pay for the tires regardless of warranty as they are wearable components ?

I part ex'd my 2015 330d in for my 2012 640d and when I did the walk round check of the Six I said I want new tyres on the rear and new discs and pads on the front as they aren't acceptable on a 32k car and they agreed to replace before I picked the car up.
Basically I think if you bought the car new on pcp then when handing it back you have to have approved tyres fitted but for you buying 2nd hand you can put whatever you want on.

Not a problem. Mark ordered last night on my trade account so should be able to share his feedback once his delivery turns up. U will find these prices your local garages will say is below trade on most of them execpt premium brands. My rears are on 5mm im going to stick premiums on the rear next time round
