640 vs 650.. Besides engine whats the difference?

Title pretty much says it all.. besides the engine what are the differences? Is the exhaust and badgeing about it?

Thanks!

- Exhaust tips and much better exhaust note (with M Sport, non-M will be less noticeable).
- Standard Nappa leather (very important in my opinion).

That's all I can think of. In my opinion, this car is gorgeous inside and out, particularly with the LEDs, full Nappa with contrast stitching, anthracite Alcantara, and ceramic knobs. Without these features, I'd go for the M3* in a heartbeat, especially if going the 640 route. The M3 isn't quite as eye-catching, but it looks aggressive and in terms of performance and handling it beats a 650. If you're looking for a super luxurious, stunning GT that drives well and has decent power, then go 640. Want a sports car? - go M3. Want a combo? - go 650. I don't think I'd pay $90k for a 640. I'd pay $70k and get an M3 and use the extra $20k to find some nice twisty roads and race tracks. This is all personal preference and what you want the car to do for you, but these are just my thoughts.

*I'd probably wait for the new M3/M4 (who knows what it's going to be called). It's not too far off, and it's likely going to be more powerful and have more toys.

640i is perfect option.. This will be driven by my wife and sometimes by me.. just looking for something that will be fun for me to drive on the weekends and it seems it has as much HP as the 335i which is pretty fast!

I think the sheer size of this automobile disqualifies it from being a true sports car, no matter if you have the 640, 650 or the M6. Throwing this vehicle around twisty corners of a mountain road is definitely possible and very entertaining, but demands space and respect for the heavy weight.
It is a true Grand Tourer - and probably worlds best of its kind. North Cape to Marbella in 3 days? I volunteer.....

Superspeed.. you'd be the perfect person to talk to.. your car is exactly what I want.. how does the car handle performance wise in day to day operations? am i gonna get a grin on my face when i punch it on the highway or on a clear road in town?? Also the exhaust, how does it sound? Are there any aftermarket exhausts out yet and/or could the 650 tips be retrofitted?

Thanks in advance!

Mario,

In general I can say that the car is very easy to live with, allthough I don't like visiting tight parking lots - mostly because people are careless when opening their doors. Poor visibility when backing is compensated by rear view camera, or even better the simulated top view cameras.

I have another car as a daily driver but apart from above, no doubt the F12 is perfect in that aspect as well.

I wrote a report after first 4 months. It gives you all the details. You can read it here:
http://www.6post.com/forums/showthre...=585521&page=2

The exhaust is very discreet unless you push it. But in the higher revs it's more race like. Be sure to open your windows or have the top down by then!
Still I am considering the exhaust from the M-Performance Parts program for more sound through the whole register, available from March 15. You find the whole program here:
http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...l=F12&cat=1009

I am a very keen driver, but I don't miss the extra power of the 650. On the positive side you get a mileage better than anything else in its class!

Go for it!

The mileage on the 650 isn't great - not that I was expecting it to be all that good. I'm at about 1300 mi and am averaging 11.5-12.0 (mostly city or lead-footed highway). I'd hate to see what it would be sans EfficientDynamics, aerodynamic styling, etc. lol

The 650 has plenty of power, so I can't imagine the 640 suffering for the difference. With the new generation the performance figures all moved up so the M6 is a lot faster than before, the 650 is as fast as the old M6, and the 640 has the acceleration on the old 650. I don't know how BMW did it, but it's astonishing. The 650's 0-60, if I recall correctly, is 0.1 slower than a DB9 (and the BMW time is conservative - not sure on Aston's accuracy with their reported numbers). Great value for the money, very luxurious, and far better tech.

I highly recommend the Integral Active Steering option for those tight parking lots. It transforms this long wheel base into a sense of having short one when the back wheels turn.

Thank you for all the great information.. looks like the 640 will be more than enough. I am about to go with a 640 convertible, AW with black interior.. Only option is premium sound.. the car has everything else I'd want stock and BMW has a great lease of $899 right now so I cant pass it up! Will post pics soon --- Thanks again

The 6er is fairly well equipped right out of the box, so you can't go wrong. Allthough adding loads of options is an extra spice, it doesn't affect the agility of the car (with a few minor exceptions), neither the beautiful appearance. If I didn't know about those small but expensive temptations, I probably wouldn't have missed them either

Looking forward to see your pictures. Alpinweiss was one of the colors I considered thoroughly

Indeed. It has a smaller turning circle than my Cooper S, at least it feels like.
Very impressive!

Tight parking spaces are tough- those doors are really really long. Other than that, have loved it for the week I've had it.

Biggest difference, besides the engine, between the 640 and 650 is that you can get a stick inteh 650. That's what decided it for me.

Like the stick, xDrive is only available on the 650 (in the US anyway - 640d xDrive in the European market). You probably knew that, but I just thought I'd mention it.

You are indeed right. Besides they do it with a lot less thirst and emission values so low that little flowers are growing out of the tailpipe.
Bayerische Motoren Werke started out in 1916 by constructing air plane engines. Since then the "M" in "Motoren" has pledged the company to head engine technology.
No wonder we love these cars...

The tube dimensions are different. There is a 70mm rear tube in the 650i to be fixed to the 60mm of the 640i center tube (pictures from RealOEM.com).
