2015 F06 M6 firm ride / hard suspension

I recently upgraded from a 2008 E60 M5 to a 2015 F06 M6. Amongst a few issues I'm having, one is with the suspension. The car does not have the Competition Pack.

The ride is super firm, bordering on uncomfortable. When I change from Comfort to Sport I can't really tell much of a difference and then into Sport+ there's a bit of a difference, but not massive.

Reading reviews, etc. before I purchased the car I had read that the ride is extremely comfortable and even during my test drive, I didn't notice anything off. Perhaps it was on super smooth roads. But now it feels like my old M5 when that was in Sport+ when the M6 is in Comfort.

Strangely on one occasion it seemed to suddenly (unless I was imagining it) ride very nicely and soaked up all the bumps with ease, but I stopped soon afterwards and it's never been like that since. I think before this I was playing with the steering setting when I pressed the steering button by mistake instead of the suspension button. I can't imagine that this would change anything with the suspension...

I've checked the error codes and I can't see any issues with the suspension.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? I've searched many times and I can't see a single post with anyone complaining of this issue.

Are you on run flats? If so, replace with go flats asap. I went with Michelin PS4S which many on this forum seem to have chosen as well.

With 20" rims and PS4S tires I would say that my ride quality is fair. I tend to drive most of the time in sport suspension. I don't know what the E60 M5 rides like, but I can say that my E90 328xi rode like shit with run flats, and rode better with go flats but still harsher than my F06 M6.

Also are you positive no modifications were made to the car you bought? I bought mine and it had a modified exhaust. I purchased from an independent dealer who didn't even realize that it had been modified.

Agreed, for comparison sake - my 650 had runflats versus my M6 which does not, the M6 is more comfortable lol

Whilst I don't run a GC, there are going to be similarities with my M6 F12.

What make and type of tyres are you running?
Are wheels OEM or a different custom size, etc?
I take it that you have carefully checked the tyre pressures?

There should be notable differences between COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS. If not, then it suggests that there is a problem with the EDC.

In the past, I understand that BMW did NOT recommend runflats for the M6. Maybe that's changed now...

Sorry...should've mentioned this before...

I have 433M wheels and brand new Michelin PS4S on the front and Pirelli P Zeros on the back. (I had to change the fronts a few weeks ago...hence the difference...will replace the rears when they need doing). They're all standard size.

The pressures are all good (I presume..) I haven't checked them personally but I guess the fitter did the fronts correctly and I asked him to check the rears.

The car has a Stage 1 Quantum tune on it...I'm not expecting that would change any EDC settings, would it? I would rather lose 120hp (claimed) and have a comfortable ride compared to what it's like now.

I think I'd check the tyre pressures myself, rather than rely upon someone else! Also, having done that, you can then see if the TPM accurately reflects what your gauge says.

Just an FYI...in some markets the 2VB (TPMS) option isn't standard equipment...and they may have the simpler (indirect) FTM {flat tire monitor} system which doesn't display PSI & Temp...but simply shows the tires illuminated in green (pressure is within spec) or amber (loss of pressure and tire needs to be checked). If they have the FTM system, they will need to physically check their (COLD) tire pressure for accuracy then adjust & reset the system if not correct.

So I went to a petrol station and checked the pressures. I think some of them were slightly over as I could hear the machine letting a little bit of air out. I've set the fronts to 2.3 bar (33.4 psi) and the rears to 2.5 bar (36.3 psi). It now rides quite a bit better...but still a bit too firm for my liking. Anyway, an improvement. I think I'll drop the rears to 2.3 as well next time I go that way.

I checked the iDrive and yes it has RDC. It wasn't something I'd noticed was there... I'll check that out next time I'm driving.

Hopefully you did a reset when you changed the air in your tires so that you have a new baseline for the system to calculate in case you have a loss of air pressure. Anytime you change the air pressure or change the wheels/tires…you need to do a reset of the TPM system (regardless of which system you have).
