New BMW M6 (F12/F13) and Old M6 (E63/E64) Compared

COMMENTS

As with any new model release, it's very interesting to see how the new model fares against the predecessor. We were curious how the stunning all-new BMW M6 Coupe (F13) and Convertible (F12) compare to old M6 (E63/E64), so we've compiled a photo and specs comparison. Big thanks to member HKS786 who put together the comparison photos.

Was never much of a fan of the previous gen. It's nice, just not my cup of tea. The new one is downright amazing though.

Wow, the convertible is a lot closer in weight to the E6x than the coupe is. I suppose the chassis was more rigid to begin with, requiring less additional bracing for the vert than the old platform.

The new car looks so much more exotic to me.

I am struggling to see any aspect of the older M6 that I like better than the new.

Maybe the fact that they had black brake calipers.

No contest. The new M6 kills it in the style department inside and out. The old M6 was never my cup of tea either.

i like the M vent better in the old (i think the line trailing down to the bottom of the door looks heavy/droopy.

And i like the 'ducktail' spoiler of the old better where the top of the taillights arc up to the spoiler. thats better executed.

The new M steering wheel looks spindly/fragile

Also the wheels look a little more deep dished in the old which is nice. i dunno id say 60% better, 40% worse.

There's just no comparison. The previous M6 doesn't look like you want to drive it fast, just cruise along but the F12/F13? Looks like this thing is meant to be driven the hell out of it! And it it'll have a much bigger presence on the road.

1M = success/win
M5 = a little early but the reviews say it'll be a success/win
M6 = looks like it should
Next-Gen M3 = ??? (very excited to see what the ///M division is going to do!)

It's funny how when a new version of a car comes out, it looks so much different, except for the profile......it's almost the same

Same applies for the F30!

Unfortunately as someone that has owned the e63 in two version since 2005, I have to call this a fail. I owned the 645ci for 3+ years, and now the M6 for 3+ years, and this is uninspiring, and the front end looks way too much like the F01 for my liking. As BMWs target audience, they lost my sale. And just as big of a concern as the design fail, is the overall size increase and weight increase, the e63 M6 was already big, and perhaps bigger than necessary, but adding yet an additional 308lb to the coupe means that this is even a bigger porker than mine, so thats another move in the wrong direction.
Add in the engine fail, and you have the trifacta, fail all around BMW, thanks for killing my M6!

Cool game this new vs. old thing

IMO, everything other than what I am gonna write down below looks better in the new one and overall it gives an impression the old was never able to. Just the coupe I am taking into account but basically the same goes for the convertibles:

Exterior: The side sills, the exterior rear mirrors, the bottom half of the rear bumper.

Interior: The steering wheel, the sat nav screen area with the cap,

are better executed in the old M6. And they practically have the same wheel design.

It is quite impressive that despite being so different in details how they share the same silhoutte in the profile pictures.

Both are great cars (with great silhoutte and profile),
and physically they are Pretty much the same cars (except for the details),

but at least the new one makes it easier to look at it... way easier! (especially seeing the comparo here!)

Definitely nicer looking.

BMW should have release this 2nd generation as the first ... :P

You are calling for a witch hunt my friend Honestly I share some of your thoughts, the ones other than the esthetics of these cars, I already posted a personal list of what looks better in your M6 but for me that's about it, the new is a progress. However, I never said anything about the numbers and dynamics of the new M6 and that additional weight is really too much to swallow, digest and justify. Plus, despite the even bigger size I saw in the dimensions chart that the rear seat area is comparable with my 1M! What progress we had then after all that increase in size and weight? The numbers of the acceleration is also close but I bet in the discipline of the in-gear acceleration the gap will be wider. The new one must be driven on the road and track and compared to the old M6 by professional reviewers. But I doubt this will affect its sales because this is the kind of M car which is less sensitive to driving dynamics evaluation. It will sell in great numbers if the global economy permits and unfortunately will affect your M6's used car pricing negatively. Since you did not like the new one, why not keeping yours longer? If you go listen to the one of the sounds of the new car you might feel like you are going to keep yours 4ever anyway!

I'm a fan of N/A engines so I kind of miss the old V10. That said, I do agree that the new one looks better, if a bit less inspiring (or divisive).
