If you mean 1200 break-in service, it 's just for M cars!

If you own the car, and plan on keeping it a long while, it is not a bad idea to do it - even at your own expense.

I believe it is the lease deal he mentioned in his "B6 deal today ..." thread.

But I totally agree. I'm doing my own "intermediate" oil changes between the BMW recommended oil changes, since we intend to keep our M6GC for a very long time. I intend to do the same with our upcoming B6 purchase.

Your M6GC does not really oil change unless the message pops up or the service due comes! However usually you need to add a quarter periodically when the level of oil is low and the iDrive will let you know. My car asks for a quarter every 2k-3k miles

And you're still drinking a quart every 2~3k? Seems a bit high and atypical.

I believe in the hard break-in method, none of my BMW's have ever eaten a drop of oil. Almost 10k miles on the 6 and the level bar hasn't moved. I also like to change the oil in between the BMW interval, keeps your performance up and engine clean! IMO BMW's intervals are too far in between and after the warranty is up it becomes your problem. Point is, take care of your car and it'll take care of you!

Right... still it asks for oil! I had the same issue with my first 650i back in 2011 and then the second one in 2013. I asked the SA and he said it's normal... maybe the way I drive needs more oil LOL.
As far as I know turbos need to be cooled down by oil.... at least it's what I was told... many people in M5post has the same situation...

Many people here too, but consumption usually diminishes with mileage based on anecdotal evidence. According to the TSB, the excessive consumption of the N63 engine is due to the crankcase ventilation system. I have to believe it's the same with the S63. I am sure driving style has an affect as well. If you live near redline, you will consume more oil.

The turbos in our cars are oil and water cooled. But running oil through the turbo bearings doesn't consume it.

Could not agree more. While I have no perfect evidence, it would seem to me that MOST people with excessive oil consumption issues babied their car for the first 1,200 miles.

Of course, the theory behind the hard break-in method is that it needs to be done in the first 30 or so miles (I seem to remember) and of course, with an engine warmed to temp.

And finally, none of this applies to the brakes -which DO in fact need a soft break-in period.
