Autocar.co.uk got a chance to sit down with the new 650i and got to do a full road test/review of the car.

First, they found the 650i to be a 'seriously rapid car', only half a second slower then the Bentley Continental GTC getting to 100mph. They go on to comment on the highly responsive turbos and transmission. The overall impression they give is that the engine/drivetrain on this car is perfect.

What they didn't particularly like was the steering, handling and general responsiveness of the car to their inputs, they go on to say:

Quote:
... None of the modes dials much natural feel into the electric power steering system, which seems sticky at times and overly heavy at others. None of them really counteracts a mild tendency towards understeer. But worse still, none of them feels like a proper baseline setting in which the 650i offers an ideal blend of control and compliance.
But this is just a snippet of their review, you can read the whole review at the source link below.

I bet in a few years we'll be reading the same comments for a 3 series. What do they not realize during the testing process??? They drive all around the world and the Nurburging to tune the performance of the car, but when it's finished, it still sucks! I'm starting to loose my confidence in BMW; I already experience enough "unBMWness" in my Range Rover Sport, so I need a car to satisfy my needs. Right now that's my e90, but who knows what the future will hold.

Car Magazine's printed issue also had similar comments, unusual as they usually love bimmer handling.

Let's not forget though that this is a big GT car that weighs what, 4500 lbs (I don't know the exact figure)? It's not shocking that it isn't going to handle well. I can't comment on the suspension, but the steering isn't good because they are using the EPAS system for fuel savings. We can expect EPAS on every car in probably less than 10 years. Sad, but just like FI, it's a realization that we have to live with.

Also, who's the main demographic for this car? It's people that aren't going to drive the hell out of their cars (people in their 50's, and 60's).

Sure, it's softer (in all ways) than the previous 6er, but it will still be a great seller for BM due to the fact that the people buying the 650i do not want something so harsh. The people that want a harsh 650i will get the M6. BMW knows this and I'm sure that will have nothing but rave reviews.

Also, it will not be surprising if these are the same comments for the F3X BMWs, but again the M versions of those will make up for it.

I agree. The new 6 has become your rich uncle's sort of car now. And when you're 65 you could do a lot worse than a car like this.

well, it's Jethro Bovington from CAR Magazine who likes BMWs, otherwise they're pretty non-selective.

no no no, bmw, please do the cars you used to build for us!! don't ever sacrifice with handling and dynamics. BMWs are known to leave its competition for dust in every segment in terms of handling and agility, so please don't lose that!!!
