Back to the question
In my own experience (F12 650i & F10 M5) they are so different that they complements each other. The sumptuous M5 interior with full Merino leather and all the M amenities are difficult to compensate with the user friendly transmission of the six series in daily cruising. Please if you have to select one, must be the M6 with the full leather option. In my opinion the F13 BMW is the best solved design in the auto industry so the top of the line should be your choice.

650i or M6
I too struggle with which to buy... Looking at 2015 models so the difference is not as much as buying one new, maybe 10-15k. My concern with the M is the engine noise...? I'm on speaker phone all the time (This will be my daily driver) Will this be an issue? There are not any M6's to drive in my area so I will be buying one online and having it shipped to Alabama. So once I pull the trigger, its mine :/
Also, is it true that the 650 has a quicker response? I'm not that concerned with top end speed. I had a CLS550 and was unimpressed with its take off ability.... Thanks for your feedback! |

My remapped N63TU is almost at 180.000 kms now, without any serious issues.
I change the oil every 20.000 km and warm it up gently before stepping on the go-pedal. Still feels every bit as fast as it did 100.000 kms ago. No oil consumption issues whatsoever. For me the 650xi (with remap) is the best daily-drive alternative to an M6 (which is not so good in the rain and is sometimes a bit too harsh for daily. |

I have driven 3 M6 gran Coupes, one B6 Alpina, and a 2018 M6 Competition coupe. In my opinion, the M6 gran coupes ride ROUGH. The M6 Competition (with 600hp) also rode ROUGH and was so over powered that every time I hit the gas the rears broke loose and the traction control all but stifled forward motion. The salesman told me it was because the tires were cold, but I tend to doubt this opinion, especially after about a dozen launches.
I also drove several 650 Gran Coupes and found them to be the sweet spot. I currently own a 2016 640 GC and am very happy with its power and acceleration. I thought seriously about swapping it for a 650 due to hp envy, but in the end decided that I would keep the 640 long term as my Luxo-cruiser and instead of trying to get super car performance out of a 4500 pound GT car, would buy a C8 Corvette for my road jollies. 911? What 911? Never been a fan. They sound like giant egg beaters working on a bowl of steel nuts and bolts. |

I was seriously considering the M6 GC when I ordered my 650xi GC. I would have happily taken the extra power, but the lack of xDrive in that power range wasn't ideal for a DD - at least in my neck of the woods. Likewise, I've been there done that with sport suspensions on my DDs. It's fun until it's not... again, here in the Northeast, where the roads are barely maintained. For my DD, I wanted it to be fast but also leaning towards luxury. The 650's 445hp provides more than enough power - most of the time I'm barely using half the pedal. But it's nice to have on the highway when you need to pass or accelerate quickly... or every so often when you just want to give it a little squeeze. But that was far from my priority. Instead, I opted to fully load the 650 - night vision, active seats, B&O, adaptive drive, active cruise control, etc. I just wanted it to be "all it could be" from a luxury and technology perspective. Combined with xDrive and 445hp, it's a near-perfect long conveyance highway warrior and DD. The only thing that needed "correcting" were the terrible tires. In sport mode, the transmission is that much more aggressive, the dampers tighten up, and it's plenty "sporty" for a car of its size. The adaptive drive's active roll stabilization also makes the car much more flat in corners. But there's no escaping the length and weight of the car - it's not a car that's going to be tossed around like a sports car that's carving canyons, switchbacks, etc. So, my take - get a 640 or 650 (xDrive if you're in a rainy or snowy area or even travel often) that's well loaded on technology, ensure you have some comfortable tires on it, and make it the ultimate DD. Then put a sports car in the garage with it to use when you want to head to those canyons, country roads, or a track.

At times I consider doing some tuning, but even without, I remain very happy with looks, drivability, power, and technology within the car. Steven |

I was having this dilemma picking between 640 and 650 xdrive. After driving both, I picked a fully loaded 640 msport. Had plenty of power for me, insurance costs, etc. Just my 2 cents.

Big advantage of 650 over m6 is that you can get xdrive. And if you put 10-15K in it, it will outperform m6 in every aspect except financial value.
