2016 BMW M6 GC  [10.00]
"active Sound Design"

I saw a review of the M6 GC that said the M6 GC, unlike the M5, does NOT have the "active sound design" system that uses speakers to amplify/ synthesize exhaust sounds inside the car.

The dealer says everything they see on product bulletins says it's on the M6 coupe and convertible and doesn't mention GC, but they're sure it's on there.

I say "amplify/synthesize" because the dealer says it is the former with the exhaust noise just essentially miked, but I have read it is the latter, with deeper bass than the car is actually generating.

I think the car should live or die by noises it is actually making, so I don't like the system. Does anybody here know whether the 2016 M6 GC has this system?

I don't like the concept either.

I tried to detect it in my car, but I don't hear anything. I always drive in comfort mode, so I don't know if it is something that turns on in one of the sportier modes. FWIW, I have read that, for those cars that have it, your friendly neighborhood BMW coder can turn it off.

Disabled the active sound setting in my coding to see if i could hear a difference, and I could not. Maybe it's just an M5 thing?

I didn't disable it, but I also can't hear it... Even in Sport+ and driving it hard, the cabin sound is very quiet, and it's only when I open the windows that I can really hear the car roar.

That's all good news. The dealer's response was half-hearted, in that he admitted the written guidance only mentioned the 2-door versions -- and the sales guy admitted he couldn't hear it during the test drive. I swear the one review said the Gran Coupe doesn't get the system.

I think JimM6GC is right that I would just ask the dealer to turn that off.

Thanks.

I can hear it on my coupe very clearly. It sucks. It's specially noticeable after getting the M Performance Exhaust because the notes do not compliment each other very well at all. Not sure if I want to turn it off as the car may be too quite that way. Keep in mind it only comes on on Sport and Sport+ throttle modes.

I never noticed any artificial sound in my gran coupe. I mostly only hear the sounds when the windows are rolled down. I also just wired open the exhaust flappers on my OEM mufflers and it sounds so much better.

Ive had both a M5 and M6GC. In the M5 w/o CP, it was def. noticeable. I have the CP package in the M6 and do not hear anything similar to that of the M5. The M6 w/CP, you can hear an exhaust but not anything like the M5 nonsense.

It's a really easy code change, so you could have your coder toggle it off/on and then you can decide which one you prefer. If you're going to be a serial bmw owner you may want to spend a couple of hours just learning how to use the coding software yourself, since it's useful to know how to go back and forth on various settings to change them to your liking. I came from a 7 series so in contrast the exhaust on the M6 sounds pretty loud to me either way.

I don't hear it at all in my 2013 M6 Coupe.
