L,

Thanks for all your information. I've got my fingers crossed that the problem has been solved. Since it completely goes away with warm weather or a warm car I can't imagine that it's not a real safety issue so I'm gonna just keep ignoring it.

If I had to guess where it was coming from, I'd think it was the right front corner.

Please report back next winter with an update on the successfullness of the repair when it gets cold.

This was something that I did not want to live with, even though it only occurs when cooler outside temps prevail. The way I see it, if someone gets in the car with me and hears it, I don't want to explain to him why this $100,000+ car rattles. Plus my wife was hearing it, and if she mentioned anything about it (which she did), I went crazy.

You could probably rent one of the Chassis Ears and do some of your own diagnosing.

I will keep a close watch on this and report back if things change.

Update: Back at the dealer. Heard the rattle again the other day while it was 50 degrees F OAT.

Dropped it off for them to diagnose. Now they say it’s the left strut (right strut was the culprit two weeks ago according to dealer and replaced). They are using Chassis Ears to diagnose. Left strut is now getting replaced.

I’m h*ll bent on getting this resolved.

All I can say is "you're the man!" Keep up the great work to solve this.

Once they take it out, please try to have the technician show you what was rattling that causes the noise. After what you've gone through so far, I'm not optimistic about this being the cause of the problem.

Yes, I have had the car for approximately two weeks since they swapped out the left front strut for a new one. So in summary, both front struts have been replaced within the last 45 days.

I have yet to hear any noise from the front since this last repair. The temperature here has been 50 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer since then. I do believe if there was an issue, I would hear something though.

On a sour note. I did notice two new door dents, one in each front door. I am super anal about how I park in public. It drives my wife nuts. I checked my other cars in the garage to see if their doors lined up, they do not. So my thinking is that these two dents occurred during the week long stint at the dealer. I did call my service advisor, she asked for photos, which I emailed her. Have not heard back but am not optimistic. LESSON:ALWAYS LOOK YOUR CAR OVER WHEN PICKING UP! So frustrated over this.

I’m anal about dings and front end road rash too. I never leave the car at the dealer without a full walk around. I even have them look under the front bumper.

Luftpost,

Thanks for the update and it sounds good. Just hope that it holds up with colder weather. And it sounds like no info about what was "wrong" with the struts that made them rattle.

Walt,

No, was never told by anyone what actually caused the sound, just that it was coming from the struts, per the Chassis Ears.

Hello everyone

I've got exactly the same issue on my 640d.
Knocking noise is there even when worm outside and goes away after 2 miles.

Bought a car as bmw approved used so came with a warranty. Taking it to the dealers next month, hopefully they can fix it.

Could someone kindly share a recording with that noise ? Video uploaded previously isn't available anymore.

Many thanks

Martin,

Sorry that the video that still exists really doesn't capture the "rattle" very well and other videos have been deleted. I still have the 650 and the rattle has remained the same in very cold conditions until the engine warms up. It is not something that I'm concerned about anymore but would be interested in anything that your dealer finds. Good luck.

Over two years later, and my noise is still gone. Martin, if you would like to PM me your email, I would be happy to send you a recording.
