At 50,000 km I was warned that I may need a new water pump and new cam shafts as they were non hydrolic lifters sometime around 56,000 km and the self leveling headlights started to play strange games of not working

Estimate for water pump work was over $7000 as the engine had to come out, and they advised may as well do the cam shafts at the same time so add $8000 to the bill ($15000)

Estimate for the self leveling headlights was $2500 a side

The issue with the cam shafts and non hydrolic lifters they explained was that if the car is driven hard before the engine heated up properly from a cold start, it puts a lot of strain on the cam shafts and thus he risk of them cracking or breaking ... Remember here is a moving dial on the outer edge of the rpm gauge that increase the red line point as the engine heats up

Problem with a used one could be with any abuse or improper use when the engine was cold started

That is the biggest concern as you may not know of any abuse that could run you a bill ... For me that was enough to trade into the 2016 ... But do miss the V10 roar

Good luck, ask questions and hope to avoid a big bill later

A good friend of mine had broken the cam shafts on a 2009 M5 a few years back and his car sat for 4 months before he got it fixed

Try to find one with the least miles possible. These S85B50 engines are notorious for VANOS failures as they approach the 100k mile mark. I myself experienced problems with my transmission after the 50k mile mark and ultimately had to replace the clutch and hydraulic actuator prior to selling the car. To be honest my old E63 M6 is probably my favorite car I've owned but easily was the least reliable.

I'd have to agree ... I loved that car ... had no issues during ownership but the warning signs started to appear and the dealer started to inform me the cost of the typical repairs to be expected near 55,000 km on it ... only reason for the trade to the 2016 M6 Cab

Was an amazing car and amazing Sound!!!

Do your research ... if not it could be costly later

Best of luck ... I still love my traded 2007 M6 Cab
