Steering Wheel Peeling

I can't imagine that I'm the only one that this has happened to. I have a 2013 640i cabrio and the top of the steering wheel is peeling or deteriorating. I've tried using leather wipes and all they do is turn black, presumably from the dye in the leather. The car is parked outside of my office in the Florida sun for 40+ hours a week, so I'd guess that's what causing it. For the most part, I don't even hold the steering wheel at the top where this is happening, so it can't be from oils from my skin. Has anyone else experienced this? Should this be covered under warranty? I only have 6 months left on my lease, but it's getting gross and sticky and would like to get it taken care of.

I have never seen that on a newer BMW! I would put it on that nasty Florida humidity if anything. Do you, leave windows cracked open or the sunroof routinely? If the car is a lease then yes that is under warranty for sure! If it was one spot they would probably blame you, but the fact that it's the whole wheel says defective all over it.

I'll leave the top down if quickly running into a store, but with our surprise rainstorms, I don't do that too often. I actually had something similar on the center console where my elbow rests when driving that caused the leather to have a permanent, almost melted looking, divot which they replaced. My office is 5 minutes from my dealer, so I guess I'll drop by and see what they say.

Mine isn't like that at all. I clean my leather and wheel a lot though.

I've seen that happen on friend of mine's car (Audi) due to moisture. He'd be driving back and forth from the gym and his hands were wet with sweat and would cause a similar peeling. To fix it, he made sure he cooled down after the gym, dried his hands off with a towel and applied Meguiar's leather cream and it brought it back-not all the way but a much better than it was.

Maybe those hot Fla. temps are giving you a case of Schweaty hands...and elbow.
