Buying Used and Cross Country

Any tips you all can offer me?

I am looking at a m6 GC in California, and I am currently in SC. What process should I follow on narrowing down the choice?

Should I ship or drive it back? What are shipping costs like? And, what issues should I keep an eye out for regarding the PPI/exterior signs of problems?

Thank for the helpful advice in advance.

Best,
H

It would be a good idea to check it out yourself or have someone look at it for you. I bought my M6 GC out of state and had it shipped. I was disappointed to find damages to the leather seats which were not depicted on the pictures. The dealership blamed the shipping company; of course the shipping company denied it. But in the end, after months of going back and forth between BMW NA and the dealership, it was covered by the dealership.

BTW, shipping cost is anywhere from $800 - $1200. At least those are the quotes I received when shipping my M6 from Chicago to San Diego.

I think it would depend in part on whether the car is covered by the factory warranty and the seller is a reputable dealer. If so I would still recommend a ppi, but would not be overly concerned. That said, a road trip in the new car would be awesome!

Bought mine in Atlanta, GA. Drove it to Sacramento CA! I've never done the cross country drive and always wanted to experience it. This is probably one of the best cars to do the drive in, ANYTHING less comfortable and it would have been annoying lol.

Good experience to bond with the car, learn it, and appreciate it, as well as the scenery.

Airbnb'd my way through the country, and it was an awesome experience! I recommend it. I was also contemplating shipping it, but just didn't feel like paying 3k for covered transpo, when I could be experiencing allt he adventure for a third of that price!

Hey guys, thanks for the input. Seems like driving it from CA to SC might be cool, but timing is a bit off because of the pressing nature of time for some outstanding projects.

That being said, any idea what a PPI looks like, or how I can get someone to do one for me specific to the m6GC? or are they just standard reports, something similar to what you get from a title insurance report (covered/not covered).

Secondly, the dealer is not a BMW dealer I believe, and it has all my options and breaking 92K for less than 10K miles. Seems a bit fishy bc of price. If you had suspicions based on price alone, would it make more sense for you to make the trek out there and inspect the car in person? Should I get a carfax too?

thanks,
H

W/o year hard to judge value. Carfax a must. You can check option list here: http://bimmer.work

Lots of options for a ppi, depends where car is.

I have done now 5 cars out of state sight unseen with *knock on wood* no issues at all with the condition upon arrival, granted all were from the respective brand dealers

I would ask the salesperson to do a face time call with me and show me the car in detail before signing the papers.

It may be worth your time to fly down there and see it, and then either drive it back or ship it at your discretion

From either end of the country to Houston, covered transport has cost me 12-1500 USD.

Also, upon receiving the car, most carriers will have you sign a form saying the car is as expected, if you inspect the car upon arrival and see issues, you may just decide to not sign this form.

A 2016 would have plenty of warranty left. I would ask why traded in so early to non-bmw dealer. Repo, accident?? Did you run carfax? I would call local bmw dealer, sweet talk them with vin and see if any issues. Also mobil ppi for obvious issues.

Is it a dealership of luxury cars or a used auto guy? Not that you can really trust either, but I wouldn't trust a used auto guy as far as I could throw him.

I would hire the used car buyer from the closest BMW dealership to go look it over. Pay him 300 bucks. Don't bother with the online services - you have no idea who is doing the inspection, and my one experience with them was very poor.

Personally, I would never buy a car costing that much money sight unseen. Fly out to see it, but be prepared to walk away.

also - ask the dealership for the prior owner's contact info. They can give it if he or she consents.
