640i N55 Water pump

Hey guys, my 2015 640i recently showed up a code 20A804 which states Coolnt Pump switched off due to blockage. Radiator fan blew on max speed after turning the car off. Car was not overheating. Coolant reservoir was low, I topped it back up for now and will check to see if the code comes back. First time this has happened. The research I've done points to a failing water pump. Parts are lookin to be around $500 if it is the waterpump. I usually do maintenance at home but this seems like a relatively large job. Has anybody here done a DIY on their 640i water pump? Or taken it to a shop if so how much was the labor/cost.

Thanks,

I’ve done mine on my 535, which should be very similar. It wasn’t too bad of a job. Look up videos on YouTube and search the forum for a water pump replacement on an N55.

I have the water pump, thermostat, and oil filter housing gaskets. I plan the replace all this year before the pump fails. My 2015 640i GC has almost 76k on it. since I have to remove the intake manifold to replace the oil filter housing seals I plan to do an intake valve clean. All looks pretty straight forward if you are a DIYer. I've been in aviation for 40 years as a tech and engineer so I have no problems doing the work myself. I just don't enjoy crawling around on the floor much anymore.

With your experience I wouldn’t worry too much about the task as DIY. The OFHG takes some time to do, but none of it was difficult in my opinion. You’ll have to update when you start getting the work done!

Got the water pump n thermo for around $500. Shops gonna put it in for $350. I usually like to DIY but I feel you there about crawling on the ground no more.

This sums up alot of us diy-ers- happy to do almost anything from above - but last thing we want to do is get under the car. I can't even be bothered doing my own oil change just because i don't want to jack and get under.
