Newbie with a problem M6 gran coupe

Hi All,

I've moved through the M cars over the years and recently moved to a 911 turbo which ended up being just way to small for my small family.

So I purchased a brand new M6 gran coupe in silverstone with extended leather and a whole heap of other toys. I'd had the car 2 days when I realised the bonnet and driver side front wing had numerous bits of dust under the paint. To be honest I only noticed because the car was booked for a swissvax detail and I was just eying up the paint. I took the car back to bmw on day 2 showed them the paint, they took some pics and had it approved for warranty work. I assumed that they would heat up the dust spots and remove the dust and relaquer(that's what I was told) bmw have had the car for over a week and I had a call today to say that they're struggling to get perfect paint match and the only way round it is to blend it in upto the A pillars. Now I'm not normally a pain when it comes to most things but the car has done 400miles
and is less than 4 weeks old(I like driving it!!) the sales manager advised me to get it painted and if I'm not happy with it, reject the car and they wou take it up with bmw. Has anyone on the site done this before in the UK and what will the process entail please?? Appreciate any input

Reject it, you will take a huge hit on that paint work when it comes to the value of the car later. Cant help on what that entails in the UK though.

Dirt in the paint means those panels were likely repainted by someone at some point. you'd be surprised at how many 'new' cars have to have paint work before they're sold (cars get bumped at dealers quite often).

BMW finishes all of their cars in waterborne base coats, which can be challenging when trying to color match in repair situations. Since you're in the UK, I'm going to assume solvent based paints are not in use. They're slowly but surely being phased out in the US. however, if they're trying to use a solvent-based base coat and match it to BMWs waterborne base coats, that could be your 'color match' issue right there.

paint work, if done properly, will likely not affect the value of the car down the road if you go to trade it or sell it. high quality paint work, again if done properly, is nearly undetectable. crash repair is what nails you on value, not correcting minor paint blemishes.

Thank you for the responses, I've been told by the dealer the car will be painted and ready for viewing on Monday evening. The sales manager has suggested that I reject the car once it's painted and they'll do the rest, I just don't want this to turn into an prolonged stressful process. However I really appreciate the feedback on the paint solvent issue and the colour match issue. This will give me more ammo for Monday as clearly a factory painted car should be easy to match

At this point if you're not emotionally connected to the car, and don't care to swap it out I would talk to BMW and have them take the car back.
Usually dealers would never touch the car for aesthetic imperfections and claim it happened because you did it, but.

Since the dealer has already warrantied the problem they have claimed full responsibility for this issue so you have the upper hand.
Up to you how firm you want to be about it.

I'm going to reject the car based on the fact that a new car should not need to be repainted and also someone has suggested this will hit trade in value if the dealer/buyer identifies this. Also the car is waiting for a new drivers seat cover as it was delivered with a scuff and stitch pull. At the very least I need money back or compensation to cover the potential loss I could face as a used car which is painted. I've never done this before so it's a new ball game for me. I'll update on Monday

If you change your mind and decide to keep it, go look at the car in direct sunlight, not in the evening under artificial lighting. Sunlight will reveal true color matching and if the paint is done correctly, the repair will be undetectable. My wife's Sapphire Black Metallic 7 was hit in the rear, the rear was repaired and repainted, it is perfect. In the US most shops will guarantee their work for as long as you own it. Not sure in the UK.

If you are being offered the option to reject the car by the dealer, I'd go for it now. Having a known imperfection will only cause possible grief down the line in one way or another. Even if it looks perfect when you see it, you may find that in different lights it stands out or that it ages differently from the rest of the car. These cars are not cheap, don't compromise your ownership with an unnecessary worry.

Thanks for the advice I'm going to call the dealer and see I I can see the car earlier today in sunlight as by 5:30pm lighting will be poor(that's the time I've been told to go in).
Also thinking about it, when I traded in my Porsche the first thing the group buyer did was take paint thickness measurements so I think if they're out its a straight no anyway? Plus like Richardp said these cars aren't cheap and I shouldn't have to make such large compromises.

I have had some paint issues with my E90 M3 and seen some imperfections (slight) on my LCI M5, BMW quality control has gone down hill fast.

Will do, I've drafted a rejection letter already and spoke to the dealer to ensure that if I do reject the vehicle there is no financial cost to me. Oddly the dealer suggested I take the car away any way but I'm pretty sure with the (UK) sale of goods act I have to immediately stop using the vehicle, also if I reject why would I take it?? Happy to be corrected

Absolutely leave it with them, don't take it away or you could be deemed to have accepted it especially as you know what you are looking for.

Thanks RichardP I'm going to leave it there and I've also asked if they would like their courtesy car back (F10 M5) just in case they charge me for it?

Using the courtesy car should be OK.

The nearest I've come to your situation was a long time ago, I ordered a BMW 325i E30 Touring manual. When the car came it was an E30 Touring, but it was a 320i Auto! Basically they had forgotten to change the spec for the build. The dealer (or BMW, not sure which) provided me with a 325i for nearly 6 months while a replacement car was made.

Did you PX your old car with them? If you did then it's quite reasonable to expect them to provide you with a car, why should you be without because of their problems?

Sounds like a plan RichardP, I PX'd my last car in to buy a new RS6 but when I drove the demo it was a real anticlimax. Sure it was fast in paper but no drama etched like an M car. So I had my deposit moved in group (sytner) to their BMW dealer for the M6. I'll push to keep their car for aslong as it takes to sort out.
