Smile How many miles to a litre of oil???

My car is a 2012 F13 with 14k miles on the clock.....and is requiring a litre of Engine oil every 800 miles. There does not appear to be an oil leak.
I drive the car sensibly but enjoyably. How often do you need to top up with a litre of engine oil driving 400 miles per month.
Any usage information and advic s would be an indicator of what I should expect.
Cheers everyone.

Not normal at all and BMW have a test to do to establish oil usage rates , max allowed was 1 Lt per 1000 miles, your car needs to go in for some work.
PS) my 2014 LCI M5 used NONE in 12K miles and this M6 GC CP has used NONE in 7K miles.

Your dealer will say it's normal

I have just under 4k miles and have had to top off with two quarts every 800 miles or so. My 650i did the same thing but at a longer interval. The usage does improve as more miles are put on the engine.

Also, if the car is asking for 1 liter/quart, go ahead and put in 2. This was the advice of my service advisor. I would consider this level of oil usage normal.

Here in the UK, BMW Tec's have a test to do on the engines can't remember the details but you only have to phone them to get it.
I know Oil Weight was mentioned, but the "allowance" last year was 1 Lt/ 1000 miles, anything under that was unacceptable and work was needed under warantee.
A couple of M5's were returned to a dealer here to my knowledge for high Oil usage, and were refunded their money after a long drawn out process.

BMW have since that time introduced this test and some form of remedy.

Ahhh! A new engine. Guess I had better schedule it with my SA. LOL!!!!

I agree that just because these are high output motors they don't necessarily need to burn oil. Take it easy on your engine and you'll see less consumption - no hard running until hot, a little idle before shut down, and I like to change mine more frequently than the recommended interval. Works for me.

My M6 GC CP is like Johns, I've added 250ml (1/4/ Quart) over 24,000 miles.

Factory spec is 1L (1Quart) per 1,000 miles. If you are using more than that and are under warranty then they should fix it, whatever it takes.

As has been said a lot on this and other forums, oil use is very closely related to how the engine is run for the first 100 miles or so. An engine that is run at close to the max allowed revs in the 1200 mile running in period, without asking for a lot of power, and which has had plenty of engine breaking from those revs will use less oil and produce more power than one that has been babied. However, having said that, 1L per 800 miles is not acceptable and not normal.

Cheers Richard
Have booked car in to BMW Workshop and the responses I've received from Forum posters confirm that my current usage is an issue that needs to be fixed under Warranty.
Thanks for your advices.

RichardP, do you have a detailed source for a description of this routine? I'm going to fetch a fresh M6 GC in August at BMW Welt and the first few days will be Bavaria etc. I would like to do it correctly (as much as I will be dying to try high-speed runs and some full-throttle acceleration...). So you say high revs but not full throttle, lots of engine braking? Do I understand correctly that high-gear, low-rev cruising is bad? Why doesn't BMW say it that way? Everybody seems to agree to vary speed a lot.

For the first 100 miles only, low RPM high gear cruising is bad. After 100 miles, high gear low RPM is good (so long as you are not lugging).

High power initially is good for piston ring beading, but to offset that bad for bearing wear, so you need to hit a good compromise. As ring beading stops when the bores get coated in varnish from the combustion process, early beading in is essential. Wear on the bearings continues for much longer, so after the initial period you should be more gentle.

On our shop's F06 M6 with 20,000 miles now I have only added engine oil about 2-3 times max.
Some experience more then others.
But if its under warranty make sure to go to a dealership so they can make a note of each visit incase the consumption gets worse

So I figured I would check mine today, it's at 10000 miles, about 1600-1800 from the next service, and I get the "add a quart" response from BMW legal (lol)

What oil is in these after the 1200 mile service? I could look it up, but someone wants to post up.

I usually add Mobile synthetic 5-30. This time I got Castrol synthetic 5-30.
You can also visit the dealership and ask them to add it up.

"The company said some regular BMW motors can consume up to a quart every 750 miles, and M series performance engines can use up to 2.5 quarts per 1,000 miles under certain conditions. The company says it has a service campaign to check and possibly replace some parts in the 4.4 liter V8."
