640i 1st oil change not until 10-15k?
Hi guys,
Just did interstate drive, dealer told me when I got there that no oil change needed unless M6, since I only have 640i no oil change needed till computer says so & that replacing anyway early would be detrimental because the special formula they used on the initial oil for the seals/gaskets to help seat. I drove away w/ no oil change. I have a 500 mile drive ahead of me on Monday so hope some of u guys can tell me what to do before then (if anything) Thanks fellow 6ers! |

My 650iX has 20,000 kms and the first oil change is not for another 12,000 kms. In miles, this means no service needed until 20,000.
Most of my driving is highway; if it were town/city driving the interval would be shorter. I'd say your dealer is correct. Look at the iDrive menu - it will tell you. Bill

Old school--first change at 2000km to rid the engine of filings, sheared off thingies, and break-in debris.
Then every 8000km after that. Cheapest insurance available... For non-metric Americans, 1500mi, and every 5000 after that... :/)

My 650i GC is burning one quart of oil about every 1100 miles. So at that rate, when I have my first oil "change" after a year, more oil will have burned off than what the oil capacity is. lol

Well, I finally had to add a litre (quart) of oil as my GC reached 24,000 kms (15,000 miles). Still doesn't require an oil change for another 8,000 kms.
Clearly not an oil burner - probably because most of my travel is highway, very little city.

I change my oil between the recommended intervals, 7,500miles. Let's face it, BMW engineers work closely with Castrol to find the the "max" threshold of the oil so they don't have to pay for too many oil changes before your 50k free maintenance is up. Is it safe? Yes. However, if you drive your car as hard as I drive mine, paying $100 between intervals is cheap insurance. I plan on keeping my cars past 50k (hope I can hold the temptation of trading in). If you plan to trade your car in before 50k, don't bother...

What is the "special formula" exactly? Where can it be purchased? Could the existing special formula be drained and replaced with new special formula before the first scheduled oil change?

It amazing how much the oil service intervals vary in different parts of the world.
For my M6 GC in the UK it's 30,000km. In the US when first introduced it would have been 24,000km, now in the US it's 15,000km. If you're in the Gulf, it's 8,000km. I'll be changing the oil at no more than 15,000km, maybe 10,000km. |
