high oil consumption 700 miles

I am now getting only 700 miles before having to add oil. Dealer has comped last two bottles. Service Guy says drive harder.

Suggestions?

No leaks that I see and they said they will test when I go in for next maintenance, but that is not considered too much oil.

Currently at 36k miles.

Garage List
I haven't had to add oil more than once in my 12k miles so far. Driving at high RPM at all times must help.
my F10 550i however was so oil thirsty, I had to add a quart of oil every few months.. although that oil was much cheaper than M oil

Luckily the M6 oil is not the M3 oil....$7 versus $13, plus they comped the last two bottles.

My local dealer tops engine oil for free. Strange they charge you.

They will only top off when light comes on, plus it takes time waiting. At $450 and hour, a 20 minutes wait to save $7 is not productive, and they have given me two bottles free.

The net is all over this issue. Some same poor break-in can allow oil to seep past thew rings and get burned in the engine. Other say it is due to expanding seals (intentional design) allow oil to seep or escape.

My service tech said drive harder (presumably to get engine temps up).

I am at 700 miles a quart, 200-300 a quart is way too high

Yes this way too much consumption for sure !

At this rate BMW should offer to replace your engine FOC.

Which dealer do you use ? I am London based too !

Just got my car back, and the report states, "normal oil usage is up to 1 quart every 750 miles."

Will be buying oil by the case at this rate!

Hi

I'm based in West London, got the car booked in HR owen |Park Royal. Not sure how good they are to investigate this issue. The car has been in 2 months ago same place for a repair/warranty job.

The rate of oil consumption is excessive and certainly not a small issue,

Curious, are you getting a 'oil low' warning or just checking every 300+ miles?

The engine message for oil refill keeps popping up 200-300 miles.

BMWNA: Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km.

Your rate suggests a leak.

OK noted ! I am in South Kensington.

Did you buy the car brand new ? If so which dealership ?

There is no obvious evidence of an oil leak or oil burning with a smokey exhaust right ?

You need to tell the service manager that you want them to carry out the official oil consumption test. (I think it involves actually draining and weighing the oil after driving a known distance, but could be wrong here).

If it materialises it consumes more than permissible by BMW guidelines you need a new engine at BMW's cost.

IM6. It could be a bad seal allowing oil to pass when driving (under pressure), so you will; not see a leak.

Any smoke from the rear?

dropped off the car today at HR owen Park royal, they will start their proceedings tomorrow.
Havent seen any smoke from the rear while the engine is under load. A common question that keeps being asked. that would certainly point towards dodgy deals and rings etc.
