650i GC FUEL PROBLEM

650i xdrive GC FUEL PROBLEM

PLEASE HELP!!! So I bought bought my 13 650i xdrive GC a little over a month ago with 59k miles and all of a sudden last week it starts bogging down and sputtering like crazy. I brought it to my mechanic to have him check it out and he said its a misfire and it around 60k miles I should be changing the plugs anyway. He changes the plugs and its doing the same thing. No power and sputtering like crazy. We start doing research on the issue to see if theres a recall of some sort and I come across the CUSTOMER CARE PACKAGE CAMPAIGN PROGRAM (bulletin B001314) and it seems like my car falls under that issue. It states that all the cars produced between the certain dates with the 50i motor have this issue. I call up my local dealer to set up an appointment and when they run my vin, I'm told that there are no open recalls on my car. Looking into the recall further, I see that my car isn't listed in the recall. I have the F06 model GC. My question is, if all of these motors are the same, how could it be that my car isn't included in the recall? The 650i coupe is listed in the recall but the GC that is produced during the same time isn't?

Info on my car:

Type code 6b43

E series F06

Engine N63TU

Prod. Date: 7/24/12

Ahhh. Gotcha. Well I appreciate the feed back. Hopefully if that's the case, it won't cost me too much

The TU motors are not covered by the customer care program. Take your car to a BMW specialist. If it is sputtering that bad, it should be throwing codes, which will help diagnose the problem. Have your mechanic check the vacuum lines, too.

And that's the strange thing....it's kicking no codes.

No codes? that seems almost impossible. Again, have your mechanic check the vacuum lines, which are a known replacement item - they bake in the heat of the motor's V. Then I would be taking a trip to the dealer to diagnose what is happening. Otherwise, you are just throwing parts at a problem hoping something works.

It's kicking the drivetrain malfunction code now. I don't know whether to be happy or sad about that.

Be happy -now you can figure out what's wrong. And please report back.

check your high pressure fuel pump. Those are usually the first to go. Very expensive fix.

Hey guy, brand new to the forums.

This sounds like the HPFP, make sure your SA gets left and right one tested. I had one replaced and the other one went bad the next day. (I think they replaced the wrong one, but i got 2 new HPFP out of it, so it's okay)

Aside from that, the spark plugs should last ~80,000, not 60,000.

Cabin filters, and intake filters should be done by now too, if you haven't.

Best of luck!

So it looks like the problem was the ignition coil. This is what I got from my mechanic.....

CONNECTED BMW DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER AND MISFIRING FAULTS STORED FOR CYLINDER #7. REMOVED BANK 2 AIRBOX, TRACED FAULT TO BE DUE TO FAILED IGNITION COIL. REPLACED IGNITION COIL #7, RESET DME ADAPTATION VALUES, CLEARED FAULTS, ROAD TESTED AND MISFIRING FAULT ELIMINATED AT THIS TIME.

Looks like I dodged a bullet with this one. $150 fix

Don't get comfortable just yet with it just because they cleared the codes. My 650i coupe (11/15/2012 build) is in for the 3rd time on this exact issue. First they replaced the vacuum lines for the open campaign on that (cost the dealership nothing to do that), but I kept getting the "Drivetrain Malfunction" and massive limp mode home. Now I'm getting 2 new fuel injectors. This problem with the N63tu has been documented as being the bad injectors from the prior (no "tu" motor) still being used in the early production 2013 models. Also may be bad coils, but I doubt it.

My mechanic didn't just clear the codes....he changed the ignition coil as well. But he did warn me that these injectors tend to go on this motor so we'll see what happens

Ok this all sounds too similar. So I’ve been bringing my 2013 650i in for about a year. For the dreaded Drive train Malfunction.

I’ve had my fuel pump changed HPFP
I’ve had coils
I’ve had spark plugs
I’ve had injectors

They even got me a new engine! If you could believe that!

Two weeks later after new engine
I still have a problem with the HPFP trouble code
Brought it back now they said they need to put a wiring harness restraint on the wires near high pressure fuel sensor.

Just picked up the car.

Hope this fixes the problem
Just don’t understand why they didn’t put the harness on when they changed the fuel pump the first time?

I’ll keep everyone updated. This might be the issue (wire harness next to fuel pump)
