What do you guys think of me throwing it on kickstarter or indigogo? This way I can put in the correct orders. I think this would protect both sides from fraud (internet makes it so much more prevalent). Just an idea.

Like I said. Having 10+ orders makes this the most ideal method. Making a smaller batch puts the price point rather high ($300+ per unit just for the plastic).

Also, turn around time for the manufacturing is ~5-6 weeks.

Just a heads up if you're milling this:

you can 3d print at prices of less than $0.30/cm3 and have delivery in less than a week.

Also completely irrespective of batch sizes.

If you didn't want to disassemble fobs and assemble the end product you could use something like Shapeways where you can put your model for sale through their platform. You can set a price regardless the cost, and then anyone that might want to buy it, has it shipped to their place and then they can do it themselves.

Props to the OP for this!! Count me in. With the right social media campaign I'm confident a kick starter would be a success.

While I agreed with you before I started shopping around, the fact of the matter is that I'm trying to make this as thin as possible without sacrificing rigidity. I have a chip indentation that is .3mm. That requires the 3D print to be higher detail which takes considerably longer to process. That costs more money. I have quotes that are close to the machining price of 1-2 units. Add to that, I don't think the 3D print will be as strong. Yes, 3D printing has some stronger materials, but most of those utilize carbon fibers which wouldn't work for a keyfob. It would act as a faraday cage and block the RF.

Close to $300 and that's without the Helicoils that are being installed by my other source.

Count me in on a wallet key, been looking for this for a long time. Stiffness will be critical though, circuit boards are incredibility intolerant of flexing.

I keep my wallet in my back pocket, so unless the Key Fob is soft and bendable I would never want it. Wallet in back pocket, phone in left front pocket, OEM key fob + house and garage key in front right pocket =]

Cool idea if you could make it soft out of leather or rubber type of thing.

Just to give you guys an update. Been a little busy at work, but I'm still making progress. I just got a used fob in that I wanted to test a theory I had in opening the case with less damage. I also wanted to measure the button placement and see about making the case just a little bit thicker so that we don't have to remove the buttons. It still won't have physical buttons though.

I also received the heli coils and screws. This is much better than threading the plastic.

After reading about wallets affecting the back in a negative way. I started carrying mine in my front pocket. My back feels much better

BTW, the latest revision will have it as being able to be on your key ring or wallet. So, your choice

Very cool, although my fob fits perfectly in that tiny front pocket on my jeans

Great idea! The design looks good. I think you've come up with a solid product!

For now I just leave my keyfob in a zippered pocket of a vest I wear all the time as a key. I could definitely see myself making something similar someday though. I really like the idea of it being able to fit in a wallet (would be too thick for my current wallet).

Yes, still in the works. Hurt my hand so I've taken a little time away from this project.

Definitely interested

My 10 year-old CX-9 has the Mazda CA key and it's the greatest thing.

Can't wait to have something similar for my E70!
