I would have called it a scam the second he said he is so busy that he cannot call me on the phone. You can be working in the fucking mines but at some point you have to come out and go home, at which point you can make a fucking call. The WU thing was just the icing on the cake.

Also this

His poorly written English means he might not even be in the US.
Next..
Claims the "agent" acting on his behalf is a he. Ask to send the agent money.
Agents name is
Destiny Nicole Foloowell; which is a SHE. And probably some whore stripper.
Points to ponder: Why couldn't he WU or Paypal the money to the agent himself?

I would have asked him if he was a Nigerian prince before telling him to fuck off.

who sends "agents" , oh yeah, scammers, that alone would red flag it for me. I probably wouldn't have gotten past the first exchange though due to my suspicious nature. If they won't meet in person from CL, forget about them!

I am glad you realized before it was too late.

The CIA and MI6. Unless your agents name is Jason Bourne, Peter Quinn, or James Bond; fuck off!! I would probably want to punch this guy in the face the second he wrote "agent".

Another good point posted in this thread; who the fuck ever agrees to the asking price?

You didn't mention that it might have come with a whore-stripper option. Now you're talking, especially for a simple lousy exhaust system. That's waaay better than what I'm waiting to get from the Nigerian prince.

Well the guy who tried to scam me offered MORE then my asking price. That was a WTF moment. So I played the game. I was selling a car, he was on a ship at sea, sending his agent to pick it up and of course was paying with PayPal. I told him in a pirate type talk that I had been to sea me-self with Popeye as me first mate. To prove he was at sea, I wanted him to send me a selfie with the Captain on the bridge. There will not be any of this PayPal foolishness, I would only accept Cash (USD), gold bouillon, or pirate treasure.

It stopped.

OP is right check your gut, don't take the bait. Don't do any deals.

I don't understand how this ever works....I understand the fact that they will send you some fake email showing that the money was sent, but can't you just check your paypal balance???..how would anybody ever be dumb enough to send the extra money without first having the other money in your account?? .....either way good to know nobody got scammed and thanks for sharing this kind of information always helps

Surprised you went through that whole thing. I get those text messages/emails all the time. At first they made it through the first exchange and then I cut them off after "extra money." Nowadays, if a message seems too polite or fishy I immediately end it. They usually quote the entire posting title in there text or email. That's a big clue.

I was just going to say the same thing--I've bought and sold many things on CL and this is the only policy will do.

Seriously. Why did this post have to be so long? Do not engage scammer after reading the third word of his inquiry.

Ive' gotten a ton of these emails from people.

Two ways they've tried to scam:

1. Buy a freaking VIN Report similar to CarFax (enter your cc info) i obviously did not do this.

2. Exactly what you described, but i never got that far.

Isnt the most logical thing to check your true paypal account and see if the money is there? I'd never trust an email

A similar scam was tried on me in 2007. I'm surprised these scammers haven't gotten more sophisticated in nearly a decade. I suppose you don't need to if it's working.

Shit like this makes me want to get into the Nigerian scamming business. I mean I could easily increase their business twenty fold over night with minimal effort.

OP, I'm sorta like you with regards to being a nice guy, but I personally wouldn't have gone as far as you. But you figured it out before you got scammed, so that's good.

I, too, have a CL story..
This asshole was dishonest and wasted my time.
https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/5969788174.html

So I made this ad.
https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/5978644384.html

My post has helped at least three people, and I hope the number is actually larger. I want to make this guy's sale as difficult as possible.
