White Smoke 650i 2014
Hi all,
Background on the issue I was driving in the city @ around 70KM/hr (~40 miles/hr) and I hear a strange engine/exhaust noise which lasted for a couple of seconds (hard to describe, sounded like a gurgling noise, definitely abnormal and never heard before in the car). After around 200 meters I come to a stop at a traffic light and a thick cloud of smoke (it was at night, smoke appeared to be whitish/grayish) came from the back of the car all the way covering the front windshield!! First thing that came to my mind was.. no way, this can't be my car! I immediately linked it with the engine noise, looked behind me, and yes, smoke was indeed coming out of the 650i 2014 with less than 8000 miles on the clock! So I shutdown the car, needless to say how embarrassing the situation was, switched it on again as traffic started moving, parked the car on the side of the road and left it switched off for 15 mins. started the car again, minor smoke from the exhaust, switched off for another 15 mins and on again, no smoke, waited for a few mins, looked all good. Next day I headed to the dealer. Dealer inspection The car is now at the dealer, it's been there for almost 1 week. Initial feedback I got from them was that they were suspecting defects in the Turbo lines and some valves, which needed replacement. They did replace them a few days ago, they test drove the car but the issue is not resolved. They've removed all the spark plugs from the engine. Surprisingly, there appears to be a defect only in one bank of the cylinders (a total of 4) as all the spark plugs on that side were black, most likely due to oil leak or something. Dealer has contacted BMW in Germany for advice, awaiting their feedback to know what's going on What pisses me off the most, apart from the fact that it's a new car, is that I've taken extremely good care of the car, the break-in was done as per the manual, and throughout the 8k miles I've not even exceeded 4K on the RPM! I mean come on BMW, it's a $100K+ luxury sport V8 445bhp, and I'm experiencing smoke from the exhaust!!! Summary So to summarize, the smoke appears to be due to excess oil leaking and burning, dealer still unsure what part needs replacement, awaiting BMW Germany to advice. I just hope they don't have to take the engine apart to fix it. Has anyone experienced this on the 6 series yet? Any suggestions on how to move forward with the dealer considering it's a new car with very low mileage? |

White smoke is usually water vapor. While your dealer will sort this out for you, it sounds as if a seal on one of the turbo inter coolers has failed, and coolant is leaking into the mix, creating the white smoke.
Spend more time near redline and exercise those seals! Good luck.

I had the same problem with my X6!
I had a bad accident and when the dealer fixed the car they replaced the coolant and something with the oil filter (not sure what part) anyways 10mins after I took the car out of service the white smoke appeared with aan error (engine fault) I took it back and the service personnel told me its only the car system getting used to the new parts fastforward 2months later I had to pay agmc 38k aed for fixing the whitesmoke error it was a real disappointment |

that is a common issue in Dubai. Sand gets into the turbo and causes the reflactor to overheat and the disturfaster to produce white smoke, but the dealer has a fix.

Just received feedback from BMW and the fix requires opening / taking apart the engine! Which is totally unacceptable
I refused the suggested fix and I clearly informed BMW that I do not wish to proceed with this option especially considering it's a relatively new car; the issue is production defect. They are willing to replace the whole engine with a new one. What do you guys think? Or shall I push for the replacement of the car altogether? |

Wow!!! How many miles on the car? I would push for another car. I agree this is totally unacceptable. The dealer probably will not want to do it. Time to contact BMW directly.

for some reason I sort of feel like I would rather my engine get looked into rather than a new one. maybe this is just old feeling when you looked for used cars and saw 'engine replaced' I always thought of that as a bad thing, not a good one, lol.
So I guess I would go for car replacement, in your situation if there was no car replacement then i would take the whole engine for principal and it being a fresh production motor |

I had the same problem. Instead of fire in the engine. My 650 Burned too much oil 0.5L /1000km. I waited one month and do give me a new engine. At the time I got a 525d GT for a moth while they did the replacement. Don't take hesitate any other options just tell them to change the engine. Now my engine runs perfectly.
