2012 BMW M6 w/ 4800 miles - odd noise
Hello forum members,
I have a 2012 BMW M6 (F12), with Mission Performance stage 1 tune. In the past 200 miles, I have an experienced a high pitched squeaking/squealing noise, especially in the beginning of the engine warmup phase. After the car warms up, the noise stops. When I open the front hood, I can barely hear it, but I can hear it more underneath the vehicle. The sound increases in tempo when the throttle is pressed. It isn't impacting the vehicles performance... at least none that I noticed. I am posting 3 videos, to see if I could get some feedback. https://photos.app.goo.gl/tV80EJmJhOVz7GB53 Thank you kindly, Sebastian |

it's going to be a pulley or a belt related to the motor and attached accessories. I want to say, it'll be a idler pulley belt. But every belt needs to be checked.

Thanks for the reply.
I wonder if I added a little bit too much oil, if that would cause this particular issue. I'm trying to drain half a quart to see if the issue subsides. |

It may also be a mid pipe (or rear axle back junction) gasket replacement?
I had this issue before, and it would get loud upon revving. Noticing the third video, it seems like it did get louder. And, it kind of resembles the sound a steam engine -- but a really small one that compressing air? Either way, have them check the seals for the exhaust system. If you're the 2nd owner, then the previous one might have given the vehicle an exhaust upgrade temporarily before selling the vehicle to you (or back into BMW at lease end). Cheers. |

Thanks for the feedback. I do have an aftermarket exhaust.
The sound subsides and totally stops once the engine is warm. Could that still be an exhaust gasket issue? I'm trying to take her to the mechanic... I hope it's nothing catastrophic or $$$ - but I will definitely update this thread once I get an answer or fix. Wish me luck. |

Just an update on this issue... I have taken the vehicle to 2 shops. One a BMW Dealer in Columbia, SC and an independent BMW shop in Augusta, GA. The BMW shop doesn't see anything wrong and the independent shop believes it is a connection issue between the midpipe and downpipe. They tightened the exhaust connections and the sound went away but came back this morning. Does anyone else have any recommendations or any other shops I can take it to? Thank you in advance.

Get new gaskets/rings for the exhaust where it connects to the downpipe. Should solve your issue.

Spot on... I just got off the phone with Alex from Mission Performance (they did my tune) and he relayed the same thing - recommendation to change the gasket. I am doing a catless dp install this Friday, so I will ensure to change everything out. I will update the forum once I complete the install on Friday.

Update: Today I replaced the gaskets that connected the midpipes to the downpipes. It totally eliminated the sound... thanks for all the feedback.
