Auto dimming side mirrors

Recently I purchased a used M6 that has auto dimming rear and side view mirrors. The problem is that they are being dimmed to the darkest extent even in overcast, low light conditions. It's hard to even see if cars are behind you because the dimming is so dark. I have referenced the owner's manual - there is no way to adjust this. I'm thinking one or both of the photocells in the mirror are faulty. Has any one had this issue before?

I wish I could figure out why mine never work.. I think it may have to do with coding and that is how you can adjust sensitivity and how dark they get?
