My 650i: drive train malfunction: talk me off the ledge

I have a 2013 650i (fully loaded with M package). I've owned 2 911s,
A Benz CLS, a Jag Xk and currently have a 2014 Benz sL550. Hands down the 650 is my favorite.

But it has been a colossal pain in the ass. At 12k miles, drive train malfunction appeared and fuel line rail replaced. At 19k, High pressure fuel
Pump replaced. At 32, 35, 36 and 39, same error with pressure sensor replaced and most recently, high pressure fuel
Pump again ($2800) repair.

Bmw has stepped up and covered all but $800. Kudos to them. I love this car, but i swear I have no confidence in driving anywhere beyond a one hour earshot of a dealer. That sucks for a car that came in at $105,000.

I've never had similar recurring issues with my other cars.

Should I bail on this model? At this point it is just under 40k miles and I owe $28k. I can't get anything remotely as beautiful for that price.

Is this the n63 motor/drivetrain or the updated TU motor? I want to say it is the old N63 which is a piece of crap and you should get rid of it immediately. The n63TU motor/drivetrain has been bullet proof so far (other than the hoses that sit in the V of the motor - too much heat for them so they need to be replaced periodically). If your car has the TU motor, then it is an early one and is a lemon. Ditch it and get a newer one, as the problems you are reporting aren't reported here.

Your issues are not uncommon to BMW's although your car does seem to require much more repair than other 5/6 series models. My experiences......wife's old F10 528i that we owned for 1.5 years had drivetrain malf. message and the pressure sensor, etc was replaced under warranty. We sold the car the following week for a X5. My last car 535 GT (F07) had drivetrain malf. and I lost power on a drive back from Vegas, barely made it home. It was fixed and then my air conditioning went out twice. Again, fixed under warranty. Mind you, both cars were under 50k miles. Sold that car as well for my current 640 GC. You'll see drivetrain malf. issues with every BMW model so it's not specifically 6-series cars. If your car is still covered, I'd just keep it. If not, I'd get rid of it asap. At least you have some equity for a newer car.

I am having a drivetrain malfunction when I accelerate from 0mph to ? Just by changing lanes. Two times this week then some light on my dash board came on. I have a service appt. On the 27th of February with BMW. I will let the forum know what my results are on the repair. I have my own theory of what I think is causing this malfunction. (Twinturbo) starts losing power immediately. No accelerating, must pull over to reset the car. I added a quart of oil (as BMW said when the oil is low, it can trigger this malfunction). I will post soon with results.

I'm going into the dealer tomorrow for my second go at this.

First time they replaced one bank of injectors and "cleaned" the top side of the engine.

I took my 650 out yesterday after being away for a few weeks. It's been sitting in my garage. When I started driving it, the low fuel light came on so I stopped at Costco to fill up. Headed to another store which is only about 1.5 miles away from my house. Came back out and went to start it up and the car wouldn't turn over. Got the same drive train malfunction and engine light. The car would not move. Called AAA and had it towed to the dealership.

They called me back today and said it needs a new low pressure fuel pump. Does any of those conditions above have anything to do with the failure? Just seems too much of a coincidence that the car has been sitting for a while with low gas and I just filled up.

my 650x has 29K mi and is very early 2013 (actually June 2012) and nothing has happened yet, but waiting for the hammer to drop any day now. I did get notices that fuel injectors and fuel tank leak module are now covered for 10yr or 120K.

I love the way this 650 looks and drives, but man, I feel like its a ticking time bomb. Wife wants to take a long 2000 mi driving trip this summer and like others have said I just don't want to get more than 1hr away from home with it.

I've been having fuel pump issues on BMW turbo engines since my 135's to which I had them replaced 3 times! Never had any issues with the NA motors from BMW on my e36 or e92 M3's.

That's definitely a sad statement that you can't enjoy your car on long trips. This is the reason why you have to get an extended warranty for these cars. If you don't, it's waiting game.

have you resolved your issues? i just picked up 2013 650 gc. i made sure it was the TU engine. had the car for about a month now and just got the drive train malfunction, with 35k miles on it. the carfax did say the drive train was replaced around the 24k mile mark, which i just thought well i have a newer drive train.

I have a 2013 650i and I got the drivetrain malfunction at around 54k miles and the car would start shaking, lose power and then shut off. After an hour or so, it would be ok to drive. Took it to the dealer a few months back and they diagnosed it as a leak from a worn out turbo gasket. It appears to have fixed the problem and I haven't had any issues since then.

I've asked this once before and never got a good answer. Have any of you purchased an extended warranty, used it and been happy with the company?

My CPO is up this August, and the few names of companies I have all have terrible reviews for the $5-6K price tag. Right now I have CNA National Warranty and Warranty Solutions as two. Both don't have so good on-line reviews.

I know BMW does not offer any extended on the 650

Anybody have a better recommendation?

that was my understanding, any extended warranty does not come from BMW, maybe they did, but no more. Only after market companies offer extended. It would be nice if BMW did, since I can't find any that have a good review. Anyone have different info?

Cant say I know the answer today but they did as of 1.5 years ago. You are asserting BMW doesn't offer an extended warranty for the 650, but does for other cars, including the 640i, and the 550i, and the X5 50i, and the 750i? Where does this understanding you have come from?

Red face

I want to get the BMW extended warranty.

I want it to be BMW who screws me over when the time comes, not some stranger. I'm used to it.

About a yr ago, speaking with my local BMW dealer service rep, he indicated BMW has no extended warranty deal on the 650 and I would just have to go shopping. I don't know about the other models.

On another note. I was asking him if he would recommend that I should get extended warranty based on what he sees coming in. His answer was that he did not think it was worth it. He said he has only seen a few cases of 650 transfer case replacement come in. Otherwise, nothing major $$. After thinking about it a little, a transfer case replacement probably would cover a $5K warranty policy

Or a really uninformed man. Check with another dealer, as I don't believe the info you are being provided is accurate. As to the necessity of a warranty, it depends on your risk aversion and the depth of your pocket, and your ownership horizon, etc.

650's have been pretty solid so far, but if something goes wrong it will be an expensive fix for sure.
