clarify...you want to paint a piece that is made from carbon fiber? if so, yeah, sand/prime/paint all you want.
i'm guessing you aren't asking if you can paint carbon fiber onto metal or polyurethane, because i don't mean to be rude, but that would be a literal LOL! |

yes, but why would you? People go out of their way and pay up for the raw CF finish look. Else, you're better off just getting the exact same replacement OEM part in the fiberglass/plastic prepainted. It'll at least have a more consistent look.

CF is just fancy fiberglass - plastic with carbon instead of glass weave. I have never done it, but I can't imagine why it would be an issue. You will have to rough up the surface then spray it. If the piece flexes then add an agent to allow the paint to flex without cracking. Many cars these days have CF pieces painted.
The trick is to hide the weave. It's common for the weave to print through the paint so you can see and feel the texture through the paint. If you can feel texture you will need to build it up, or just live with it. Sorry if it's vague, but it's all I got. |

It's kinda a pain but I'm one of the few people apparently like you.
I'm not a HUGE fan of external carbon fiber. Unless it has an original weave or serves a functional purpose just paint it... It's hard to get a nice smooth surface on it due to the weave. Takes ALOT of sanding to get it perfectly smooth |

honestly you could just always vinyl wrap it. That way if you get bored you can just go back to CF.
