Automatic Rain Sensor

Answer me this - Why is the automatic rain sensor for the wipers not automatically turned on?

The automatic rain sensing wipers can be turned on and off for those times you go through a car wash.

You still have to turn them on to work.

Also for those times when the blades are stuck to the screen with ice.

Okay - So other than car washes and super cold days that freeze the blades to the windscreen, are there any other reasons that the automatic wipers are not automatic.

Funny thing is I used one of my circa 2000 Ford work vans this weekend and it had fully automatic rain sensing wipers...then I hopped into my Range Rover and that has fully automatic rain sensing wipers and come to think of it so does my summertime Jeep TJ.

In a day and age that lighting is instant on, I can facetime with my wife on my cell phone and my car know the tire pressure and temperature of every tire in real time, Why can't that auto-sensing rain detecting $107,000 green light that is blocked by the steering be on all the damm time!!!

My Merc has the sensors on all the time and of course my BMW needs to be activated every time. And I honestly prefer the BMW's implementation.

The Merc randomly decides to wipe once or twice even though the windshield is dry. And gas station attendants always get into fights with it when they try to clean my windshield. Forgetting to turn them off during car washes is a nuisance as well.
