Looking to buy 2013-14 M6 - any pitfalls/advice?

Hey guys,

Long story short, I helped my girlfriend of 10+ yrs (may as well be married) get an 15 F80 M3 and have been driving it alot and now I want my own M :-)

It's pretty amazing that you can find a 2 yr old M6 for less than an M3 but that's good for those of us willing to buy used.

What I am asking is any advice on pitfalls and things to look out for on these vehicles. In doing research, it appears high oil consumption is a thing here.
Are there any major differences between model years 2013 and 14? Currently looking at various options around the country in the $65K range for loaded 2013 GC's minus carbon brakes with many around the 30K mileage mark. Does that seem reasonable?

I just bought a 2013 m6 coupe with 27k miles with all the packages except b&O sound system(it has the premium hifi) for 60k. Luckily for me it turns out the car is cpo and im good till april of 2018 haha.

But to answer your question the major difference between '13 and '14 is
1) 14 has nbt built in navi whereas 13 has CIC. The difference between the two are things such as real time traffic info etc. its a real minor difference but nevertheless
2) '14 can come with competition package whereas the 13 do not. Its about a 25 hp difference.

Everything else is pretty much the same. The m6 comes pretty loaded. The packages you can get are the driver assistance pkg which have lane assist, lane departure etc. and b&o sound system upgrade. I guess you can also get the extended leather but really just minor difference between 13 and 14

Hope that helps.

I bought a 2103 convertible with 32k miles for $61k, full loaded including B&O and Night Vision.

Cpark352 says his is cpo, but unless he bought from a BMW dealer or privately and paid the transfer fee, the cpo is not transferred.

If you are thinking of getting a factory extended warranty, I have been told it has to purchased before the original warranty expires.

I have owned CIC and NBT, not a deal breaker for me, but the NBT screen is a little sharper.

I have driven now 5k miles, one warranty issue, leaking turbo coolant lines.

I am getting 700 miles per one quart of oil, dealer says normal, and has given me some free oil.

About the cpo transferring what mjposner is partly true. It all depends on the build date of the vehicle according to my dealer guy. My build date i believe was july of 13 which makes it transferrable. My car is at bmw right now getting looked at and i asked about the warranty and they said im covered for the manufactured warranty plus another year

Good information. Sounds like if I'm in the low $60's for a decent mileage vehicle well equipped I am not getting taken for a ride.. Sort of bummed to hear I could be looking at filling up engine oil every 3 to 4 gas fills but sounds like that its par for the course with this ride?

Oil used to be very expensive for the naturally aspirated e63/64 m6 at around 15-17dollars but the twin turbos engine oil is only around 6 dollars so thats a relief haha

Bought a 2013 convertible for $58999 last week that has every option except carbon brakes, 24K miles. I hate buying used but when it's half off of new its hard to pass up.

Oh, and it's soooo fun...

Cpark352: glad to hear, forgot cutoff was 1/1/14.

I am looking at extending my factory warranty.

Awesome deal. Seems verts are depreciating faster than the rest!

Zero mechanical problems. Dealer replaced the driver seat because one of the leather panels was scuffing after 10,000 miles. Other than that, it's been a trouble free car. I have close to 20,000 miles on it now after 34 months of owning it.

Sounds like you got a really great deal - in fact one of the best I have seen! Congrats. I am assuming you are the third owner of the car and the second owner of the car bought it CPO and then CPO transfered to you? Was the car involved in any accidents? Just curious because it is such a great deal!

Hope you are enjoying your new vert as much as I am mine!

I just purchased our 2013 F12 M6 with 19k miles, clean history/1 PO, one year left on factory warranty followed by two year CPO for $65k (before taxes (%6) and transport fee ($1400)). I thought this price was very good, but it is definitely not the best out there. The icing on the cake for me was the 0.9% financing that we got. We went ahead and made our first payment last weekend, and checking out the amortization schedule of our loan our very first payment had $3x going to interest and $11xx going to principal! Hard to beat that!

I have been having an absolute BLAST in the vert ever since. We got it 2.5 weeks ago, and I have not even considered picking up the keys to either of our other cars since! Even though it feels like a boat compared to our M3 (let alone the 911) there is just something about this car with the top down that makes it irresistible to drive. The straight line speed, the shotgun blast on upshifts, the open top luxury - this car is hard to beat.

The other cars I considered and test drove were new 2015 C63 507 coupe (still really want one of these but like the M6 more), M4 CP vert (test drove a non CP coupe), and Lexus RCF. The M6 vert completely blows away these cars and I could not be more happy with my purchase. In fact, this car may be my favorite BMW I have ever driven for the great mixture of sport, beastly speed, V8 sound (will be better once I get exhaust), luxury, B&O sound, amazing seats, and top down fun.

If you are looking at the earlier years of M6 IMO finding a CPO similar to mine is the best deal out there if you can get the 0.9% financing. I say go for it ASAP!

Db750-I too came from an M3 Vert. How did the M4 compare, as that was another choice but I felt that it was not enough of an upgrade. That said, she is mighty big....

My m6 GC has had nothing but issues. I clearly got a lemon. Just make sure you have a warranty

Mine had

- complete air con fail
- squeaking brakes
- cup holder broke and would not close
- currently rear differential lock error.

Had the car 3 months, only 2 years old and 19k miles.......100k new. I'm getting the differential sorted then selling it. Fed up. She will still have years warranty if next owner is as unlucky as me

Before this I had a 535d with eventually 100k miles over 6 years and was 10 years old. never broke once!!!!

F cars are not built as well. Fact. (In my opinion)

Thanks everyone. I've been searching for weeks now trying to find that perfect option. Seems all the 14 GC coupes I can find online are listed at 75k+. Dealers seem to be open to negotiating bit no where near the 65k I saw some time ago. I must have come across a few vehicles with accident histories or something.

Got my mind me up on going for a 14.. Slow(ish) infotainment systems annoy me + we always use the destination send to car option from the bmw connect app and from what I can tell, the doesn't work with 13's?

Anywho...search continues

- squeaking brakes is actually a no cost feature.

No q - for my fun cars (not DD's) I find that my goto car's are always VERT's. It helps that in CA we can drive them all year round but there is something about going under an underpass, or driving through a tunnel with the top down and sound of the car echoing off of the '''. Vert's change the dynamics in a good way. My current F12 has not had the top UP year to date (other than when parked in the garage).

I am in the same i.e. Based on the Forum readings, i finalized that I would only buy a 2014 or later, convertible, less than 20k miles, fully loaded (B&O, Exec, Driver's asst packages; Comp package fun but not mandatory), ideally with a non-black interior.

But I am not finding anything even remotely close to $65k or $70k for even a non CPO car, like so many of the forum readers appear to have done. The best available for 2014 verts on the BMW CPO web site is ~85k, and on car gurus/car fax are like ~$75-80k. For 2013 verts, best prices are ~$70k on the BMW web site and $65-70k on other sites?

Have prices on used cars gone up? Or did you guys used other tricks and sources to find your deals?
