That 911.....

The 911 is clearly the beast in this lineup. If you pour over the numbers as a whole, there is simply no question. If I had the money to buy the M6 comfortably, but would struggle to afford the 911 turbo, I'd wait a bit longer and save up for the 911.

Obviously the 911 turbo should be the fastest, its 600lb less than the M6, has AWD and amost equal power. The 911 Turbo and M6 are very different cars though. The M6 has the ability to seat 4 people, and is a GT, while the 911 is much smaller and only seats 2. Plus the fact the M6 is right there with the Trubo in some acceleration measures is very impressive.

Porsches depreciate just as much as any BMW or the GTR, 6 year old 911 Turbos are selling for $60-70,000 with a few selling for more if they're in ridiculously perfect condition. R8s hold value a little better since they're rare and reliable which is a rare combo for a supercar.

The GT-R's performance comes largely from its insanely sticky and expensive Dunlop tires. You can see in any acceleration test that was not grip limited (elasticity) the M6 walks away from the GTR. I don't know if you've been in either of these cars but the M6 is an incredibly comfortable, luxurious car so the fact that it can be compared to a car that was built solely to go fast is really impressive. I've been in a few GTRs that my friends own and trust me, going fast is all they can do. During normal driving the ride is ridiculous, the transmission and diffs make so much noise that you actually have to sign a waiver when you buy the car stating that you understand this noise is normal so you don't think the car is broken! The newer years have gotten a little better but it's still a pretty annoying car to drive around town IMO.

No doubt. Not taking anything away from the M6. It's insanely powerful, gorgeous inside and out, and it's a bimmer. I love it. I just love the Porsche a little bit more.

It will embarrass the m6 on a proper track. Don't get all the GTR hate on this forum.

Just for the record the 911 does have backseats. Surely not as practical, but they're there.

If only bmw would put the TT V8 in the i8 chassis....then we would have an apples to apples comparison.

Lets throw in some corners. That should really change the results. The M6 won't be so impressive. In a straight line though, that's pretty cool. I'd take the Porsche, Then the R8.

Undoubtedly and no surprise at all the 911 turbo is the best car here performance and handling. 0-300 kph in under 30 sec for a car with only 560 hp is astonishing. Lets also not forget the 911 turbo actually produces downforce and is awd makes 0-300 in 29 secs that much more impressive. In the street you'd be hard pressed to find a car that would stand a chance against it. Plus pdk is the best of all the dual clutches here.

We all know the m6 is making well over 600 hp so not surprised its quick but they handle awfully and are the antithesis of what bmw once stood for. Track times would show how poorly they perform on the track. They are fast sleighs.

Can you scan the article? Would have been nice to see some times on the track in comparison too but geez that 911 turbo is insane whether speed, braking, handling etc.

Yep.

If only BMW put this engine in the middle of a chassis and made a supercar as well instead of only a heavy GT.

If I was bonkers enough to spend house level money on a car, at this price point I'd have a McLaren, faster and likely better handling than all of the above and probably far more exclusive.

Sadly I don't have that kind of cash to spend on a vehicle

Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread, but the M6 finishes a joint second with the GT-R. 911 wins, and R8 is voted last.

The lap times around Sachsenring as tested by Autobild:

911: 1:32,51
R8: 1:35,79
GT-R: 1:35,88
M6: 1:37,93

This is how they sum up the M6 GC:

With it's rear wheel drive and softer Grand Touring persona, the M6 fights very bravely against the competition in this test. It's engine is out of this world (unearthly), on the track a bit to much though. No one does long drives better than the M6.

Hahah. This is like politics where only half the stats are ever released.

The 911 is a lot faster round the track clearly, I wonder how the GT3 and forthcoming GT2 stand up against this group

Kudos to the 911 for those #s. However when you look at the fact that the M6 can get close with all that weight, trunk, and rear seats then it just shows you what a special ride we are dealing with. Would have definitely picked one up had I know that I would barely use the 4 seats in my M5.

Oh and by the way a bone stock (PSS too ) comp pack M6 won the Grassroots motorsports Ultimate car challenge at VIR running a 2:12 on the VIR full course ( showroom stock class ) . It was actually 1 second faster than the GMP performance modded E36 m3 too . So it does just fine on track too !

Wow are you misinformed.

The GT-R holds its value better than any other car that doesn't have a prancing horse on it. M6 values fall like bricks and modern 911 Turbos aren't much better. GT2 and GT3 are another story.

Real World Performance

Ballistic! Taking the car car up to speeds beyond 155 MPH I have no doubts this is tue.

Impressive as the figures are, I still say that the M6 could be so much better if they sorted out the traction issues of the line. The world class engine and gearbox deserve so much more than wasting power every time the throttle is put down. This week I drove several other RWD cars with similar outputs and better traction of the line and in low speeds and wondered why M could not be better. It should.

Still I would not drive anything else!

If the M6 had less weight, I bet it would have overpassed in performance numbers the 911 Turbo S. The car weighs a lot, 300 Kg could be shaved off if lots of carbon fiber parts are used.
