650xi GC 0-60 same as M5??

I know that it's an apples and oranges comparison for most of you, but I'm acutally going back and forth between ordering a 650xi GC and an M5.

As I looked at BMW's specs for the two cars (bmwusa.com), I was amazed that 0-60 acceleration is listed as 4.3 seconds for both (the 650i GC is listed as 4.5 seconds). Could that be remotely possible considering the M5 weighs 250 pounds less and has 115 more horses?

Now I know that BMW is infamous for understating acceleration times, but would they understate the M5 more than the 650 GC?

I was similarly amazed by this phenomenon. Doesn't make much sense on paper, and the real world difference (speaking of straight line speed only) is likely negligible. I believe the M5 could probably break the 4.0 second mark, but I don't think the GC could do the same.

I guess what I'm saying is the M5's time may be more conservative while the 650xi GC is closer to reality.

My 2012 650xi coupe is reported at 4.7, but I think it's really closer to 4.5. Apply this logic to the 2013, and the 650xi coupe and M6 are nearly the same - but, again, the BMW time for the M6 is likely on the conservative side.

Just marketing BS, the 650GC wont be close to the M5 in terms of performance, its much bigger and heavier and has less power...no chance.

I'm sure you're right. It's frustrating not be able to get a better feeling of just how much all around performance I'd give up for the 650xi GC's beauty and winter traction.

Its a tough call for sure, but to me the GC is just too big to be agile in any way as the F10 is already too big imho, and if not for the M magic with the suspension, would not even be drivable. The GC is a sporty designed 4 seater 7er, if you want to move people in flashy style, its the car for you, but if you want to move 5 people really really fast, go for the M5, it still going to be something special with the engine pushing close to 600hp while the 650 is just over 400hp, big difference in response and feel, and DCT too...

Now if you dont need that size, wait for the 4er Gran Coupe in a few years in M guise, it will be a bit bigger than the F30 as its on the longwheelbase 3er from China, will have the great coupe like looks but will be light years ahead in agility from the 6er GC...

The M5 have been reported doing 0-60 in under 4sec by a lot of magazines. Lowest I've seen is 3.7 so BMW's numbers for the M5 is very conservative.

Well, you've got my apples and oranges conundrum exactly. That, combined with the fact that the 6er would be my first non-manual car in over 35 years of ownership!

Same situation I was in, I was going back and forth between 6er GC and new M5 as I wanted 4 doors. After careful considerations of needs and driving style, I just decided that the GC was too too big and the F10 was too big for my needs, so Ive gone with the F30 which i'll be picking up shortly. Ive been tracking the upcoming 4er GC details so that as my 335i comes due in 3 years, the M4 GC should be just coming out and I'll then move to that for an even more sporty, agile coupelike 4door. As for the transmissions, well thats a tuff one, but the new sports trans is great and once you get used to the paddles, you'll be shifting each gear anyway, loads of fun

The GC is a looker but I could not possibly justify spending the same for one as the M5. M5 all the way.

+1 i was kind of shocked when i first read this. i'm not sure why they did this. i'm happy they made the 650 so fast, but they should have tuned the m5 to be just a little bit faster than they did. when they first released the numbers i was kind of angry they didn't just bring it down to 4.0

you gotta also keep in mind the 650 has xdrive so it's only faster off the line
