considering purchase...2013 M6 coupe 35K miles...

build date Oct 2012. Seems to be a well sorted car, price isn't bad. I've read the reviews, searched and read a lot of forum opinions. I'm shocked that the earlier cars aren't holding their value. Are they stigmatized or are the documented issues with the early cars something to really be concerned with? Any advice or opinions appreciated

It doesn't matter what year necessarily, they're all a roll of the dice. I've seen 13's with really high mileage, mines a 13 with 19k miles, im hoping for the best lol

I've got a 2013 M6 and couldn't be happier. Some minor repairs (diff and oil cover gaskets) but other than that just regular maintenance. I've actually found the prices to be rather stable lately, averaging in the low to mid-30k range. The reason for the jump in price to a 14 probably has to do with the newer version of iDrive, but that isn't a deal breaker for me.

Whatever you decide, I'd get a thorough PPI from a BMW dealer or indy that knows the car, especially the S63 motor. I'm going on 56k miles and the car still turns heads.

I've had my smb 2012 m6 for 3 years now. I bought a 3 year 30k warranty from the bmw dealership I bought the car from and regret it. I've never had an issue so far and my car is tuned on e30 so its around 650-700whp. I have it at the dealership now and they couldn't find any leaks suspension issues etc.. Only things I've had to replace was a simple coolant hose, plugs, coils which all are routine matinence. Love the car everyone thinks its way newer and I can't find anything to replace it under 60k. Only thing I didn't like was the idrive screen, which was a simple upgrade to a 12.3 inch android unit with wireless apple carplay that took 30 mins to install and made the car look way newer.

Prices are coming down, make sure you get a good deal. Also, don't get it without a warranty. How much money do you have set aside for maintenance and repairs? Brakes and tires alone are $$$. In hindsight, i would try and find a 6spd even though they're very rare, they really hold their value. Is this your DD or weekend car? If you're going to tune and modify it, GET IT BUILT. So many ppl push the platform way too far. I don't regret buying my car I just paid a bit too much for it.

1) Get it cheap
2) have money aside for maintenance (at least 5k for tires/brakes/repairs)
3) get it built if modifying it
4)Get a 6spd
5) make sure you have a warranty (Some ppl disagree with this)

Thanks for all the replies...I'm not a car newbie. I've had 60 cars since I retired from the Army back in 2003. All flavors, I'm very fortunate that I can indulge my fetish/hobby. I'm simply amazed how the bottom falls out of this platform price wise as the years go by. The example I drove was spectacular. I'm searching for the "next" car and would love to find an M6. I'm fully aware of the cost of maint. and consumables but can't wrap my head around the value drop year on year. My hope is to find one by a private seller before they just "give" it to a local dealer.

I have inside knowledge of the one I looked at, the dealer gave $31500 for a 2013 with 35K miles that was loaded and no accidents. They started the listing at 41K, I offered them 40K out the door the day after they got it, they had no money in it as it hadn't been through their shop. That was more than I wanted to offer but it was really nice and well cared for. They refused my offer. They have since lowered the price 1k. I would have loved to have found the seller before he "gave" it to the dealer.

Sorry for the rant, just wanted to add some color to my original post.

I see you recommend a warranty but from where? Dealership will charge $$$$ and can’t trust 3rd party warranties as they are hit or miss.

At least that’s a well known company. Curious if they will follow through on their end should you need anything.

Warranty is a waste of time, most won't pay out or only cover a very small portion of the labor. I've had my 13 M6 for 2.5 years now, bought as a 1 owner from mature couple at my local BMW dealer where it was sold and serviced it's entire life. Got it with 42k miles, has 47k now so I can't speak a ton about reliability but generally these cars a lot more reliable than people make it out to be. The KEY to owning an S63tu is being able to comfortably fork out $10k in the event you get an injector stuck or spin a bearing. Otherwise, plugs, coils, brakes, oil changes, turbo coolant lines, PCVs will be your ordinary service items.

For the $30k that it costs to get a nice low mileage coupe, it's a phenomenal car. Just keep in mind that it was once a $100k+ car, and the cost of maintenance and repairs still reflect that.
