Newest 2012 6-series Convertible (F13) Spy Photos

Seems like it's gone on forever, but the 6-series convertible continues testing. Spotted recently was a 650i and 640i convertible. As before, not much camouflage remains on these test mules and it doesn't take much imagination to picture the final production 6-series convertible.

Here is the BMW announced production schedule for the F12 / F13 6-series coupe and convertible.

MY 2012:

March 2011 - 650cv
July 2011 - 650cp
September 2011 - 640cp/cv
September 2011 - 650xi cp/cv

Nah, it's just the usual "Less camo equals more car" philosophy!

Car is looking good though! I think the rear lights will be amazing considering the Gran Coupe concept!

But the 640 will actually be a 3.0l I-6, just like the 7er "740," right?

lol

Yes. But what's funny about that though? The HO N54 easily trounces the old 4.0L N62 in both power and torque. My guess is that the F2x 1, F3x 3, and F1x 5 will eventually get "x40" models too.

^ little late for the f1x's, but that could change, it did for the e90's (2006-2007)...

What is funny about it, is that it makes no sense, in the past, the YY in xYY stood for the engine size, now it has absolutely no relevance, and x35 wasn't so bad (though many still think those cars have a 3.5) but stepping up to calling a 3.0l a 4.0l just makes no sense at all IMO...

Just my opinion, I'm entitled to it.

I'm sure its part of BMW's ingenious plan, thinking they will be able to charge more for cars badged x40 as opposed to x30 or x35. And I'm sure they are right, most of the people buying those higher-end cars have no idea nor do they care, they just want to sign their lease papers and drive away...

I agree with your logic, but it's not the first time BMW has gone all wonky on displacement fibs in the name. E23 7ers had an available turbo charged 3.2l six that was badged 745i. The recent E65 750i cars are all 4.8l engines and the F01 750i is a 4.4l. Ugh.

Yeah, that's why I say eventually. I would guess F1x LCI, if F3x gets it at release (F30/F31) or after the first year (F32/F33 release timeframe). F2x would probably get it once the coupe and convertible arrive.

It's less intuitive for sure. But it makes some sense, since the idea is that they are getting the performance of a typical 3.5L or 4L engine. It's true that changing from x35i to x40i is somewhat arbitrary (especially when the 335is and Z4 35is get the same (or more) power as the 40i models).

Certainly, of course. We all have them. I just figured I'd spark more discussion by asking why you felt that way.

True. But like I say above, they are also providing more power as well. In the old days when the average displacement of their engines was increasing generation by generation, it made more sense to use that as a marketing tool. Nowdays, displacement is pretty much tapped out (for the I6), and is not going to change much. So they have to find a new means to show that the car's are getting more and more power.

Excellent points and excellent discussion. I still prefer the logic that a 530i has a 3.0l under the hood, the bump in power (turbocharging) equating a bump to a 535i still seems somewhat logical, but 540i just seems odd to me. In comparison to their 4.4 and 4.8 engines, I would have to say naming the cars x44i and x48i would also make more sense than x45i and x50i...

Maybe I'm too OCD.

I agree with you - it would be nice if they matched up like they often (but not always) did in the old days.

You know, I think that it is entirely possible that, in the near future, we might see the displacement be exactly 1 less than the model designtation. So it would be:

4L* V8: x50i
3L I6: x40i
2L I4: x30i
1.5L I3: x25i

*Some rumblings about the V8 getting downsized to 4L (like Audis upcoming 4L TFSI).

The V12, of course, would be the exception.

That's all complete shot-in-the-dark speculation on my part, of course.
