Charcoal Filters

Hi Everyone,

What are the charcoal filters everyone always talks about removing, where are they located, how hard is it to remove them and are there horsepower gains and/or check engine light issues after this is done?

Thank you in advance.

They are in the air/filter intake box on both side, They require a PITA 90 degree tool. They are useless and suck HP because the KBG/EPA says so. remove them as the euro and Canadian M6's don't require them.

Keep in mind the EPA is staffed with Green Marxist who write laws to subjugate your liberty.

They are useless grey colored filters inside the air boxes put there because California law requires them, they are located inside each of the air boxes, easy to remove except for one of the screws requires one very long right screwdriver, hp gains are there but it's hard to say how much really, no check engine light or anything of the sort.

Twitch, I have seen many people in M5 forum have removed this filter and claim the HP gain as you did. Did you remove it? The gain in HP is noticeable? how it affect the throttle response? I know its useless and as you said it's because of California law since European versions and even Canadian ones do not have this filter, but I'm wondering if there is any code in ECU related to this change for US version to affect something else in case of removal!

Yeah I removed it. The only thing I could really tell a difference with without dynoing the car was that I could hear the turbo spool clearer after removal.

I would say maximum you are looking at 1hp or something minuscule. They really serve to purpose being there other than some law requiring them to be on the car when it's sold. You might as well remove them so the car can breathe easier -- no point in keeping them in place.

Seriously. You know the joke about environmentalists...they're green on the outside and Red on the inside.
