Alpina Z8 Spotted

Thought my new 235 was looking pretty good this morning, until I pulled into the dealer and saw this monster. Wow.

When I was in Munich they had a Z8 next to whatever the historic one was (I forget the model) at the museum. Seeing them side by side was quite an experience.

Maybe it's just that I've never seen one in person, but I just don't get the fanfare over the Z8. It doesn't do it for me. Much prefer the Z3/4 and M Coupe variants.

I love them too, although the Alpina is kind of the worst of them. Softened ride, lower HP, and an automatic trans. Still gorgeous, just not the one I would buy.

Perfect color combination, and as always the Alpina wheels set the car off. What a beauty.

I saw a "regular" Z8 at the dealer a few weeks ago and it's very impressive in person.

That's what it was, 507. Seeing them side by side was pretty awesome.

Check out the pics of this one that was just sold at EAG. Let me know what you think after that! I have seen one in person and it really is special. Plus, the price they fetch is ridiculous.

As KingOfJericho stated, the Alpina was tame compared to the BMW production model. Here's some info from Wikipedia which is impressive:

The $128,000 car had an all-aluminum chassis and body and used a 4.9 L (4941 cc) 32-valve V8, that developed 400 hp (300 kW) and 370 lb·ft (500 N·m) torque. This engine, known internally as the S62, was built by the BMW Motorsport subsidiary and was shared with the E39 M5. The engine was located behind the front axle in order to provide the car with 50/50 weight distribution. The factory claimed a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of 4.7 seconds; Motor Trend magazine achieved 0–96 km/h (0–60 mph) in 4.2 seconds. Road and Track measured the car's lateral grip at .92. Car and Driver magazine also tested the car and found that it outperformed the contemporary benchmark Ferrari 360 Modena in three important performance categories: acceleration, handling, and braking. As with most BMW products, its top speed was electronically limited to 155.4 mph (250 km/h).

The Alpina was the lesser car. 4.6 V8 (shared with the X5 4.6is) and Automatic Transmission.

Prices for both are somewhat all over the place -$120k - $320k but avg in the low to mid $200k.

One of those cars I kick myself for not keeping and I haven't seen one out in the wild in years.

I've seen both in person - and damn that Alpina is pretty. The interior was insane nice. I'd opt for the standard one but man it's a looker.

There are a few things that significantly impact the pricing on them, though not all are an issue today.

- A number of grey market Z8's were imported in 2001

- BMW had the Z8 Driving Experience at the PDC which were later resold

- Accident repair is a PITA. Anything beyond cosmetic or very minor body Panel damage can only be repaired by BMW.

- There was the "incident" which may or may not have involved more than one car.

- The US had several cars in colors that are 1/1 worldwide.

- The Alpina Roadster was predominantly allocated to the US (450/555) yet had never been an official Alpina market before. It's still the smallest today with Japan remaining the largest.

Amazing. I could get in a LOT of trouble in a Z8.
Congrats on stumbling across such a gem! And thanks for sharing!!
