Brake Pads/Discs 640D

Hi All,

I have a quick question regarding the longevity of the brake pads/discs for the 640D. What is the usual interval for change both front and rear?

Car is currently on 19K Miles and is showing rear brake pads need replacing in 11000 miles and front in 19000 miles does this sound about right? They don't feel as strong as they used to be.

For what it is worth my 640D Cabriolet has 9,283 miles on the clock.

Shows 14,000 miles left on the front and 13,000 miles left on the rear.

That implies a life of 23,283 for the front and 22,283 for the rear.

Your figures for total life would be 38,000 for the front and 30,000 for the rear, quite a lot better than mine

The rear brake pads always wear faster than the because the traction control partly operates by applying the brakes on the rear wheels. The harder you drive it then the greater the differential between the front and the rear.

Worth pointing out that my 640D does a lot of "town" work where the brakes get much more use than someone who is using their car for mainly motorway journeys.

I wouldn't bother just yet, but if you are concerned get your local dealer, or for that matter any garage, to do a visual inspection of the pads.

My previous 335D M Coupe still showed 3.000 miles of life on the rears but when it was taken for an MOT the inspector refused to test it as he said the pads were worn down so close to the backing plate that it would have been dangerous to carry out a brake test.

Moral of the story----don't rely solely on the screen display.

Those numbers sound typical for the pads.
Discs usually last 2 sets of pads

Sounds strange since the wear sensor would have permanently lit your change brake pads message when you still had 3mm left, which is still safe.

Unless you had some problem that caused one pad to wear faster than the others

I recently took my car in for a scheduled software update (UK recall to upgrade digital display and HUD software 2015) and asked them to check my brakes as I felt it was softer (less bite) and had more travel.

The head Mechanic looked into it in the garage and on the road and came back with it being normal for 6-series - a heavier car and different from, say, a 330d in how it stops. I am going to let it lie. Car goes in for 2nd service in 3 months where brake fluids will be changed so that might help.

Hi guys,

apologies for the late response! Thank you for your feedback. Well the car has just been in for its first M.O.T and is currently on 21K miles.

The service centre has stated that both front and back brakes are worn 6%, seems a little strange as the checkup at 14K miles nearly a year ago stated 7% so something doesn't quite add up, or someone isn't doing their job correctly.

BMW recommends replacing rotors when replacing pads. Also those number do not sound remotely close to typical to me. more like off by 2-3x
