BMW USA M5/M6 Brake Squeak SIB

BMW USA have released "SIB 34 06 14" to deal with brake squeak on non-carbon equipped M5/M6.

Dealer will check the "balance weights" on the brake pads and replace the pads should the weights be loose.

If weights ok pads and discs will be checked for other faults including thermal stress.

Thanks. Will definitely have mine take a look. Anyone who has done this and found it to be successful?

Interesting...I just started doing research on this squeal yesterday as my brakes (1,600 miles on car) have started squeaking the last few days. It seemed that the common answer from BMW was that this was normal.

has anyone gone in for this? I went to my dealer and they performed some other nonsense and not this SIB.

my brakes still squeak very loudly when I come to a slow stop. Seems to happen after the pads and rotors warm up. It's quite embarrassing when there are lots of cars around..

FWIW, my brakes squeaked very reliably last summer (we get up to 100+ here), but not now. I wonder if the issue may have something to do with thermal stress as indicated by the OP. I don't drive the car too hard, so thermal stress in the summer may explain it for me.

BTW, speedracerlo, glad to see someone else opted for the silverstone exterior!

I guess I should try bedding in the brakes first
Jim I love the SS II exterior. Was considering frozen SS, but I'm glad I didn't because my front and rear bumper need to be repainted already.

No, disagree, has nothing to do with bedding in the brakes. If so, the dealer should have done it.

Yes, I had the car in last week for my first service and the brake squeel.....and I mentioned the new service bulletin. They told me they cleaned up the brakes and rotors as there was some residue on them (with no regards to anything about brake pad weights, etc.). Of course, the very next day they were squeeling again. I don't even think most of these dealers know about the new service bulletin. I'll take it back eventually and again mention this to them.

I swear my brake squeal is even worse since they "cleaned everything up" a couple weeks ago.

It comes and goes for me. Changed brake pads, brake "paste", recited incantations - the dealer remains as baffled as I am.

My service advisor is looking into this for me right now. The squeak is extremely annoying and embarrassing.

I have had this going on for a while and its crazy annoying. 130K cars should not squeal lol. When I first brought in to the dealership they said it was common with the kinds of brakes the M6 have. I hope this fixes it. Only knock I have on an amazing car. We should turn heads from the sound of our engine not our brakes lol

More or less, most of high performance cars have some issues like this regarding the brakes. Just keep in mind your car is 4400 lb car with about 600 HP and you know how much pressure is on rotors and pads when you want to stop this monster at 60+ mph??? as an heads up watch this video and see the rotors at 4:45... and this is just M3 with about 800 lb lighter than yours

Is that just from small highway debris, or is it from track use?

I think it is somewhat inherent to the M6 brakes, as the other BMW models I've owned have all had quiet brakes until they've needed replacement. Seems like the higher the fade resistance, the more heat needed to get them to operate quietly. Carbons are on the extreme end, with the standard M brakes being somewhere between carbon ceramics and non-M brakes. The noise can definitely get annoying sometimes but I don't let it become anything embarrassing - it just lets everyone else at the intersection know we have arrived.

No, it's not inherent to the M6. It's a bunch of BS from BMW, these brakes should not squeal. Trust me, to 99% of people out there....it doesn't sound out "we've arrived at the intersection" but rather "here comes my POS rusted out car."

Maybe once they've replaced enough sets of pads and rotors under warranty they will get the idea. I've had AMG's that NEVER squealed. Mine were at their worse on Friday night after I drove on the interstate for about 50 miles (not even sure I pressed the brakes more than once or twice the whole way)......I came downtown and if I started applying my brakes 75 feet before the stop sign, they squealed the entire 75 feet. Unacceptable and downright embarrassing.

If people would complain more, the squeal is ridiculous and I'm in the process of blasting BMWNA for it, I'm not paying close to 2k a month for a car that sounds like a broken bus

I just got my ride back. I have a feeling all they did was replace the brakes and crossed their fingers that I won't be back. Doesn't seem like they have a real solution to the problem. Here's hoping I don't have to go back for that.
It's unfortunate but this is the BMW that has had me in the shop more then all the others.

1st issue was an SOS error requiring a new antennae.
2nd was the heat issue recall
3rd is the brake squeal.

All needed under 3500 miles.
