Throttle in Sport Plus changes coolant temp

I was running with the throttle set to Sport Plus this morning and noticed that the coolant was running at between 82 and 89 C instead of 98-102 C in the other two settings.

You can monitor the coolant with the hidden cluster menu (press and hold the odo reset, enter the sum of the last 5 digits of the VIN in the 'Unlock' option) or something connected to the OBD port like the P3 Cars gauge.

Anyone else noticed this or know the reason why?

No real reason I can see for this, I run engine "Sport+" daily and the car does not warm up any slower or quicker, there is just more boost held to improve acceleration/pick-up.
My economy is unaffected also.
I have covered 8500 miles now, the cars economy has improved I have switched too Esso 97 and @ 90 MPH cruise getting 25.6 MPG fully loaded, this includes blasting when roads are clear/empty.
Has my engine loosened up?, maybe.
NO Oil used at all either.

That's why it struck me as odd, apart from the sharpness of the throttle response there appears to be no other difference. It's obviously quite deliberate though, as soon as you switch to Sport+ the temp starts to drop, within a minute it's down to the low 80's. Switch back to Economy or Sport and the temp climbs back up to 100.

What fuel did you switch to Esso from? I've never used anything other than Shell VPower.

Obviously I didn't buy the car for economy, I'd have got the 640d in that case, but it can be quite impressive on a long run. 205 miles on a run spanning rush hour in the UK :

Drive in town though and it's down to the mid teens.

Now at just under 10,000 miles and I've used 0.25L of oil. I'll be changing the oil soon as it's pretty much half way to the scheduled oil service.

Access the hidden cluster menu with a long press of the ODO reset button, bottom left on the cluster. Initially the ODO will be reset, continue holding and after about 2 seconds the ODO value comes back, keep holding another 5-6 seconds and the cluster menu comes up. Scroll through items with a short press, select with a long press. You need to unlock most of the items every time you go into the menu which is a pain. Add up the last 5 digits of the VIN and enter the number with short presses into the 'Unlock' menu option. When the number is the correct sum, do a long press and the menu will be unlocked.

You can access quite a lot of data, things like Oil temp, Coolant temp, air intake temp, fuel remaining in the tank, etc etc. It's similar to the old E39 cluster menu, just a little easier to follow as there is more display capability on the F10/F06/F12/F13 cluster.

Hi Richard , changed from SHELL 95 and Sainsburys 97, which ever ~I could get at the time, Car runs great on Esso 97.

i am also using the "hidden menu" on occasion to check things, it's very useful.
I have found (as you have stated in another thread) the longer the journey the better the economy gets.
Thats good MPG your getting.

Here in the UK, we do not have the open roads free of police that you may have, so we can't blast at will for long, it's a quick blast and back down to fairly normal speeds, this is what makes these cars a bit over the top performance wise here.
Many people love the looks and would love to own one, but just can't justify one or afford one in many cases.
So we are "petrol heads" who love our cars and have to be content to be restrained till roads are empty and police are on tea breaks.
PS) the authorities here are trying to bring in £10,000 pound fines for speeding on Motorways , just who they think would pay this is another matter.
Total big brother shit if you ask me.

I took a trip to Bass Lake and back and got over 25mpg too. 70-80mph most of the way up to Fresno.

OK I tested the "Comfort setting cold start for 25 miles", then later the same 25 miles back on "Sport+" NO change in miles to warm-up or temp!! on my M5.

Interesting. Could be a M6 thing, or maybe a CP thing. You'll have to try it come September!
