640i Oil Low @ 8,000 Miles

I got a warning that the oil is at the minimum level and to add 1 quart as soon as possible. I thought the 640s did not have oil consumption issues? Anyone else with a 640 expierence this?

Yes, twice. First time was a few months ago, the other time a few weeks ago. My SA said an oil change before the 10K mark is good if you want to keep the motor running well.

All engines consume oil. One quart in 8000 miles is acceptable.

Ok, thanks. However, not all engines consume oil (in my expierence, most don't).

Trust me. All engines consume oil to some degree. You just didn't notice it between changes.

After reading your post got curious.
My '14 640 ix Vert has just over 9 K miles. Original oil. 7.5 months old.
So I ran the full oil check. Still almost full.
2/3 highway, 1/3 stop n go city driving ( NYC).

Very typical.

My 650i drank about a liter of oil every 2000 miles. Just drove it to the dealer and had them top it off. Free of charge.

+1, very acceptable. Guys who drive their cars hard will likely use much more. It's possible that your engine used most of that oil during the break-in period.

Interesting, you have about the same mileage, same age, same driving habits, etc. as me yet you still have almost a full oil level. Others have indicated that my 640s consumption is "normal" but your case makes me wonder.

650 and 640s are completely different animals. One of the reasons I bought a 640 was because I did not want to deal with the well-known oil consumption issues that apply to the 650.

My 640 needed a top off at just below 8K miles. I do a number of short drives per days so this does seem reasonable to me.

I took it in for service yesterday. They went ahead and changed the oil early, and were rather vague about the cause of the oil consumption, suggesting that it might be normal turbo consumption. I asked it ALL other BMWs with this engine expierence this same oil consumption and did not get a straight answer.

If its "normal" for 640s to need additional oil around 8K or so, then why is the first scheduled service after 8K? That does not make any sense to me - the first service should come before the engine needs oil, not after.

I have an interesting data point. When I first got my 650i, it was consuming about 1 quart of oil every 1100 miles. I recently had my first dealer service performed. Seemed silly because I had added more oil than what they would have replaced in the first oil change.

But interestingly, I've now gone a couple thousands miles since that dealer service, and I haven't had to add any oil to my 650i! Somehow the first service "fixed" the issue in my case.

I'm adding this tidbit just to confuse the situation even more. Somehow my car's oil consumption issue changed after the initial service. Maybe the tech fixed something and didn't note it in the service notes.

It is true the V8s tend to typically consume more oil than the I6s. But any engine can consume oil (a very small amount is always consumed).

Personally I've seen people who religiously follow the break-in period to have more oil consumption issues compared to those who "drove it like they stole it" - especially in the first 20 or so miles. Alas, it also could work the opposite if someone "drove it like they stole it" and the engine was not warmed up.

This was my experience as well.

My 2015 650i Gran Coupe uses aprox 1 liter of oil per 2100 miles, and my dealer said that is perfectly normal, they allow aprox 1 liter per 1000 miles. My previous car, a 2012 740i only used aprox 1 liter per 8000 miles which is way better, and acceptable.

My turbo BMW's have never lost any oil between the changes, I attribute this to a hard break in at pickup of the vehicle where you run the car in 2nd gear to red line 2-3 times at an even pace and let the engine slow itself down to 2-3k RPMs. This seats the piston rings and I have done it every time i pick up a BMW. To this day, not a drop lost between oil changes.

Yes! Excellent advice.

BMW, in my opinion, does not tell you to take it easy the first 1200 miles to prevent engine damage.

Rather, these directives are meant for occupant safety.

Hard failures are more likely during the first 1200. So, it's to your benefit to avoid driving like crazy. But, it such restrictions don't benefit the motor.
