New M6 GC - Squeaky brakes, Service in Manhattan NYC
Hey All,
First I would like to ask if it is a known issue? Coming from a '14 650 which had no brake issues in the 2 years I owned it now in this new '16 M6 GC the brakes squeak and squeal like a city bus or worn out taxi when it stops. Generally I need to drive for at least a good 15 minutes for the vehicle to generate heat and make this happen but once it starts those brakes squeal all day long at nearly any speed. As you all know NYC is stop and go all day. For what it's worth the service rep. located in (BMW Manhattan, NYC) told me because I have massive rotors it will squeak and make those sounds. Yes, this is very much a known issue. Took my M6 Coupe in to get it fixed. Squeaking is still happening. Frustrating and a little embarrassing.

There is new break pads with weights on them that will fix the squeaking. No have a M6 GC with Carbon Ceramic breaks and it's even worse. The dealer just repaced the pads as well with new weights on them and problem solved. Will find out the part number for you in the next couple of days and share it on the form with you. |

Yes a known issue and we have discussed it several times. Some owner never experience, some are dealing with it and some are frustrated...
I had it in my first set of pads. For the first 2-3k of second set, I didn't have but it came like a champ For the third set, it's not appeared yet (with 3k miles) but I'm waiting for it If you drive your car like grandma, you will never experience it but if you drive your car the way M car is meant to be driven you might experience it and to me it's normal. Over heating plus heavy braking of a heavy weight car will put lots of stress on rotors and pads and then they start squeaking ... one of the issues with drilled rotors (all of them no matter which brand they are) of high performance cars is the cracks on them that will be appeared after certain amount of driving... This is a picture from my rotors before replacement

Im having the same problem on my 2015 CP Coupe.
They replaced the pads and still the same problem. The problem is that pads are expensive and they wont replace them just because they are squeaking unless there is a Service Bulletin. All they will do is wash them off for you and then tell you that some noise is normal. The other thing you need to do is properly bed your breaks. If you get new pads, after the first 150 miles you need to "Bed them in" This from what ive read prevents squeaking. Bedding your brakes to put it crudely, consists of slamming on your breaks but not locking them up from 60MPH down to 20MPH and back up and down again about 10-15 times to coat your rotors in residue or something which will prevent the squeaking. Unfortunately for me I cant attest to this because I learned of this method about 500 miles in after my new pads were already squeaking. |

Hey all, thanks for the feedback and awareness of this issue.
By the sounds of it seems to be a known issue that affects a good amount of M5/M6 vehicles. For what it's worth if the '16 is considered LCI then the problem still hasn't been addressed. Keeping my fingers crossed when I pick the car up in another day or so once they are done. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. |

You will have to live with it. It's part of owning the M6. Bed the brakes and don't ride them coasting to a stop. When you break, break like you mean it and brake hard. That will keep your breaks squeak free or squeaking less.

Had the same issue as well. The squeaking is even worse during the hot California summers....

Agree. Very annoying in an expensive car. But it is also high performance car. Not unusual, actually common. BED the brakes periodically. Works. I do it about every quarter. I drive in rural areas therefore able to drive harder than in urban center. Less squealing. Enjoy
